Cropper - Forever

Out of the plethora of tributary acts that glorify the heydays of UK house and garage comes ARME, a live performance based duo that is here to chart a wild, unexplored area of this imaginary musical map. Arapaima & Empt have teamed up less than 6 months ago and have worked through the sunshine season to bring you their self-titled, 8-track long debut EP just in time for the Indian summer.

Their music is deeply infused with solar energy, soaked in booming percussion, bouncy claps and bursts of cheerful vocals that glide above the punchy basslines. Besides the proper use of these classics, there are a few quirky components (such as the ballroom shouts and Jersey club squeaks) that, juxtaposed with the garage-tinged house frenzy, bring a brand new flavour to the blend. 
 
The duo’s taste-range is very palatable, enabling a straightforward versatility that covers a wide array of genres - Feel It, Dap Dap and Guatemala appeal to any expert ears, Gush and Stay Around exude radio-hit potential while Let’s Go, Want it and So Clean morph into something darker and grittier that shifts the vibe from balearic to bass-heavy. Rounding off this release, it feels like every element of style that ARME employ was specifically designed to bring pure joy and nonchalance into any dark club this winter.

Up-and-coming British producers Kalli (Manchester) and Dharma (Newcastle) bisect this EP with their bigtime techno-off, adding two new breeds of muscular, bigroom sounds to your collection of club tools. FORZA is Origami Sound’s new club music concept series and this split release with two tracks from each producer marks its inception.&#13;
&#13;
Soft and rough at the same time, Dharma’s ‘Nine’ and ‘Tuesday’ are both elaborate compositions with every element in place, relying on anticipation, engineered to soothe while imploding. There to take you from your comfort zone to the good kind of shock are Kalli’s ‘Deadline’ and ‘Raindance’, both striking with raw power - their elaborate, trance-inducing atmospherics and wild warehouse hooks are predestined to bring out the rave demons in anyone.&#13;

Just like in the Mahabharata, Kalli &amp; Dharma’s coming together is pure karma, but this time they’re protagonists in a friendly versus, where the listener gets to decide their fate. Fact is, the pair is a powerhouse, so picking a favorite is no picnic.&#13;

Kalli - Deadline

At the center of Dadub's SA020 lie the myths of the ancient Greek goddess Demeter - her search for daughter Persephone, the drink at the Eleusinian Mysteries ceremonies in her honour, and the fungus which gave the drink its psychoactive properties. The opening track is 'Mistresses March', a thumping narrative of Demeter’s search for her abducted daughter Persephone. At the fundament lies a test of a new generation VST – ‘Diachronic’ - which is used to manage audio samples. The textures which merge during the near 12-minute march scrape and plummet, raining down upon the ominous marching band beat. This is an odyssey, unhappy and unflinching.
Based on the handmade modular synth system from Nicola Buono and Lino Monaco, the representation of ceremony drink 'Kykeon' is on one hand a flowing narrative and on the other a demonstration of intense artistic scrutiny: a perfect, unremitting thud. There is, at five minutes, a subtle key pattern, light but not impermanent under the cacophony of chaos. This is indicative of the ceaseless self-examination. Little details, significant differences.
Powered by a sound and groove generator invented by Daniele de Santis (Grün), 'Ergot Kernel' is a chemical cauldron. It’s a beat continuously emerging from the undergrowth; an imperious column rising; a train ploughing on, coursing through an arid landscape. Conversely, the atmosphere is bright, full of electricity and warmth, with moisture descending.
Dadub's SA020 is a journey through a Greek myth, with textural magnificence and technological innovation.

For Jesse Somfay music has always been about communicating and sharing immense feelings which he finds impossible to convey in any other way. His Borealis alias was born as a twinned satellite to his work under his birth name. Much like conjoined twins, the two share the same heart and breathe with the same lungs, and even though they speak of similar things, they do it from two different vantage points. According to Jesse, it is better for something to be felt in whole than to be defined and reflected upon in approximation, and this album - his sixth to date and second under the Borealis handle - is a truly wholesome, boundless, gorgeous emotional experience on both the end of its creator and its listener. 

Glittervoice is Somfay's most energetically intense work to date. It is both euphoric and dysphoric and the music itself cannot be pigeonholed into any particular genre - hints of techno, oldschool trance or rave complement each other just to ultimately get lost in an artfully crafted trademark sound. It’s easy to allow this multifaceted, hyperlayered, continuously shapeshifting aural multiverse to deprive you of any form of reason, activate all senses and carry you where no music has before, regardless of where you listen to it. Glittervoice’s 16 tracks encompass everything from visceral warehouse techno to stylish ambient compositions via rapid hypnotic drum loops and trance synths of cosmic proportions, all filtered through his unique etherial aesthetic. 

Having something equally introspective and weighty yet exceptionally club-friendly is a rare feat that could soundtrack any modern techno mecca - be it a big dark room or an open air festival. 
The emergence of Borealis meant an unexpected turn for Somfay, but at the end of the day, much like its worthy genre-defying predecessor, Glittervoice is yet another album not of this reality - a sonic guide to entering “the flow”.

Having already made a splash on Hypercolour and Losing Suki back in 2012 (‘Eyes’ EP and ‘Flow Control’ EP respectively), Bareskin makes a return to the roost in November with a sure fire packet of three.

Lead track ‘Distorted Symmetry’ is a deadly slab of pacey and techy house, its vocal bringing in a decent amount of soul to the proceedings.  A proper modern day house record, the production is first class, its reverberating and glitchy beats working a treat amongst the deep melody.

‘The Shape Of It’ comes deeper than a wizards sleeve, a twisted vocal hook held up with fat pads left, right and center, the minimal beats almost lending a pure ambient vibe to this one.  Bareskin AKA Josh Thompson, signs off with the cosmically titled ‘I Was Born To A Woman From Space’, a meaty beatfest, evoking shades of Mood II Swing at their dubbiest, with some extra terrestrial flutterings and deft keys holding up another cracking female vox line, defo one for the erection section.

Somebody New (ft. Tiffani Juno)(Digital Soundboy)

HIGH JET’s debut EP is a concept release built around their two steadfastly creative tracks, ‘the chase’ and ‘slenderman’. Despite contrasting in genres and moods, they are coherent in design within the context of the release, which was put together similarly to a two film feature: a retrofuture 80s French cop movie and a dark, clever, contemporary horror film. Both tracks come with an addictive novelty value, possibly due to the sense of humor the Bucharest-based duo display through their musical and visual approach.

‘the chase’ is a lax car chase soundtrack with a vivid lead synth hinting at knockabout electronic pop, French electro-house and carefree nightdrives through Vice City. The track is somewhere between wailing and refreshing thanks to its nostalgic hook and alert chord changes.

Second in line is ViLLAGE’s first take on ‘the chase’, a parade of a track that marries the ear-catching fanfare with a sugary pinch of R&B, some hybridized footwork and ensnaring harmonic repetitions. ViLLAGE’s playful pop tinges, colorful synth samples, loose progession and contained drop from his first remix of ‘the chase’ also jut out into the bouncy, melodic house version of the track.

The mood immediately shifts from the washed-out, summery vignette to a much darker place with 3 levels of rawness that the listener has to tread through carefully, making use only of a glowstick with infinite light but a very short range. The relentless and hammering ‘slenderman’ with its maddening percussion, laughter and chants (one of them being the Romanian word for monster) is to obsess over for days, while its two remixes range from ARME’s sweltering UK garage bass to Kalli’s stomping warehouse techno, all three of them dancefloor hit material.

The chord-driven, modern take on an 80s film score alongside their fun nod to the first great myth of the web - the unsettling Slenderman - are sure to indulge a savvy, reference-loving audience. The EP comes with a DIY alt-humor video that has to do with cars, synesthetic flashbacks, absurdism and the 1980s.
