Notturno for alto sax and piano - Minchew

Commissioned by CSUF new music ensemble in 2022, this graphic musical score was created as an expression of place and a means to bridge a gap, allowing anyone to potentially realize the score, no traditional note-reading required. 

I found this particular leaf on one of my regular hiking trails, an old revolutionary war era road near where Benedict Arnold plotted with Captain Andre of the British military forces. The Lenape people called this area their home at that time and they had likely made the road before any of us appeared. 

The performers for this performance are the WP New Music Ensemble (Cedar Ellis, Jeremy Maida, Chelsea McBride, Joseph Sabando, Isla Brownlow, Skylar Hagnar) with Payton MacDonald and Carl Patrick Bolleia, directors, and the composer on piano in concert on Dec 8, 2023.

This electronic fixed media work was presented at the Vermont College of Fine Arts Electronic Showcase.  It is my third use of Bohlen Pierce tuning, and the first to be entirely in Bohlen Pierce.

Brain (Bohlen Pierce)

This fixed media Electronic work is my first effort in 14 EDO (14 equal divisions of the octave), a microtonal tuning.  It was presented at the Vermont College of Fine Arts Electronic Showcase.  The words are from the pre-Socratic philosopher Heraclitus of Ephesus, arguably his most famous quote.  The speaker is my wife, Carol Beatty.

Beautiful Harmony (14 EDO)

This string quartet is dedicated to Rob Reiner who gave me many enjoyable moments throughout my entire life. This work is a first installment and there will be a polymicrotonal version coming soon. This version is polytempic but is only standard tuning.  The work is in four different and mutating tempi and differing time signatures that change throughout the work. The music is in three sections, but is fused as a single piece. I may break them up into movements, but would prefer not to. The polymicrotonal version is in progress.
