Softening Cries

Written after the 1992 flooding in Monpelier, Vermont, "Super Flumina Babylonis" by Dennis Bathory-Kitsz uses the Latin text to "By the waters of Babylon" to express everyone's sadness after the tragedy. The 12-voice music went unheard for over a decade until Gonçalo Lourenço and his Coro Odyssea performed it in 2003. The image photo here shows the flooding of our own home in 2011.

Composed in just a few days in 2000 by Dennis Bathory-Kitsz, "Mountain Dawn Fanfare" replaced a piece on the program that wasn't delivered in time to the Montpelier Chamber Orchestra. Conductor Catherine Broucek Orr led the group through traditional portions as well as improvisational and aleatoric solos.

"Unisons" is a simple piece by Dennis Bathory-Kitsz for small ensemble, with each instrument playing a single note along with a percussion instrument with 16 identically pitched tuning forks. 1994. Vermont Clusters Ensemble with Ensemble VCX.

Part I of "A Time Machine" by Dennis Bathory-Kitsz, performed by the Vermont Contemporary Music Ensemble, Jill Hallett Levis, voice. This long piece is for dancers and musicians, and uses a random menu-based set of choices for alternate odd-number sections (there are 33). Only 11 of the 33 sections have been performed to this day.

Variations on Justin Morgan's "Amanda" for chamber ensemble by Dennis Bathory-Kitsz, "An O'er Flowing Stream" had its only performance in 1989 on Braintree  Hill in Vermont, where Morgan was often found teaching, singing, tanning, and breeding the famous Morgan  Horse. The musicians played violin, two celli, and harpsichord.

"Beepers" is a 1986 cabaret by Dennis Bathory-Kitsz (written under the pseudonym "Brady Kynans") about a love triangle in the computer world of the day, full of puns as well as warnings. Starring Andrée Frazier, Gayle Hanson, and Stuart Duke, with Deborah Chaffee on piano and David Gunn on drums. Performed at The Garage in Montpelier, Vermont.

Commissioned from Dennis Bathory-Kitsz for the "We Are All Mozart" project, "O Vox Pop" was composed as a tricky duet entertainment -- which it is! Steven Klimowski (bass clarinet) and Rachael Elliott (bassoon) of the Vermont Contemporary Music Ensemble play.

O Vox Pop

"Tirkíinistrá: 25 Landscape Preludes" was composed by Dennis Bathory-Kitsz in 2002. It has been performed in part by numerous artists, but only once in its full, hour-long version, in Maine by Jesse Feinberg in 2014. 

The preludes are derived from images, each one presented in the score, along with a graph of dynamic changes also derived from the images. The thematic material is also cross-influenced by the music of the semi-homonym sound of the collection's title. Overall, it is a hypnotic, ever-changing sonic landscape.

"Moving to Lullaby" was composed for the "We Are All Mozart" project in 2007. Commissioned and set aside, it was vividly brought to life by Wes Flinn in September 2023. It has standard trombone playing as well as special effects with the voice, and as played by Wes is a glorious and resonant performance.
