One thing that is clear is that Mother Divine is not bound to any ritual or to any method. She is not a lower form of energy, where we can just chant the mantra and bind her and bring her in front of us. She is Mother Divine. She has the most divine form one can imagine. When you are in love, you don't maintain an account with the other person in which you keep record of who loves whom how much; you just love. Similarly, with Mother Divine no account is possible. I cannot say that I will call you two and half crore times, which is a lot of time, and therefore you should show me your form. It is just not possible. 

We have to realize where we belong in this creation. We are part of the divine but only qualitatively. Quantitatively we are one tiny drop. Earth is a tiny drop in the galaxy. Our galaxy is a tiny drop in the universe. The universe is a tiny drop in the multiverse. The scale of creation is extraordinarily infinite. To experience the divine, somewhere we have to be divine. I am expounding on the essence of Lalitha Sahasranamam on my faith and the basis of my faith is the direct experience. I beg for forgiveness to Mother Divine for this audacity to say that I will expound on the essence of Lalitha Sahasranamam.

01 Essence of Lalita Sahasranamam - Part 1

Lalita Sahasranamam can be done as an independent practice or as part of Sri Vidya. Ma (Mother Divine) is called Sri. Sri means where all the four types of sukhas live. Sri means somebody you can take aashrya (shelter), refuge in. She is situated on the left side of Siva. To really succeed on the path of self-realization or sadhana you have to understand your masculine and feminine aspects and these are forever changing in every human being. There are three aspects of Lalita Sahasranamam, first is devotion, second is meditation and the third is initiation. Devotion is absolutely critical, no matter how tough a yogi you are; devotion alone will make you humble. If you are not devoted to a god or a guru or even to a cause, you will be constantly battling with your own ego and anger all the time. Devotion is of utmost important. 

The first verse of Lalita Sahasranamam says that She is Sri Mata, the ultimate Ma. A mother is the embodiment of compassion. A mother is willing to accept anything. She is Maharagyni, meaning she is not the Maharani (The Queen); She is the Empress.

02 Essence of Lalita Sahasranamam - Part 2

The radiance of Ma is like thousand suns. Ma has four limbs, they are the four pursharthas, they are the four types of sounds, they are the four types of japa, they are the four types of avasthas and they are four types of guna. So the form of Ma starts with these most basic and fundamental attributes that are the very basis of existence of every single living entity on our planet and beyond.

She is holding a noose of passion. The bow she is holding is of mind. The five arrows she is holding are the five subtle elements also know as touch, taste, smell, sight and sound. From the perspective of sadhana, these are your only hurdles, only obstacles on the path of sadhana. You need to overcome these hurdles by rising above your passions, anger and desires. This will always be the first test of any sincere seeker. As you progress on the path of sadhana, you move from the form to the formless. She is much easier to attain when you worship her within you because then she becomes part of every single atom of existence. The magnitude builds to a level where you start to feel her presence.

It is not without reason that the Sahasranamam starts with the physical attributes of Mother Divine.

पापनाशक चान्द्रायण व्रत        

पापों के प्रायश्चित्त के लिए जिन तपों का शास्त्रों में वर्णन हैं उनमें चांद्रायण व्रत का महत्व सर्वोपरि वर्णन किया गया है।



प्रायश्रित्त शब्द प्रायः+चित्त शब्दों से मिल कर बना है। इसके दो अर्थ होते है।



प्रायः पापं विजानीयात् चित्तं वै तद्विशोभनम्।

प्रायोनाम तपः प्रोक्तं चित्तं निश्चय उच्यते॥



(1) प्रायः का अर्थ है पाप और चित्त का अर्थ है शुद्धि। प्रायश्चित अर्थात् पाप की शुद्धि।

(2) प्रायः का अर्थ है पाप और चित्त का अर्थ है निश्चय। प्रायश्चित अर्थात् तप करने का निश्चय।



दोनों अर्थों का समन्वय किया जाये तो यों कह सकते हैं कि तपश्चर्या द्वारा पाप कर्मों का प्रक्षालन करके आत्मा को निर्मल बनाना। तप का यही उद्देश्य भी है। चान्द्रायण तप की महिमा और साथ ही कठोरता सर्व विदित है। चांद्रायण का सामान्य क्रम यह है कि जितना सामान्य आहार हो, उसे धीरे धीरे कम करते जाना और फिर निराहार तक पहुँचना। इस महाव्रत के कई भेद है जो नीचे दिये जाते हैं -



(1) पिपीलिका मध्य चान्द्रायण।



एकैकं ह्रासयेत पिण्डं कृष्ण शुलेच वर्धवेत।

उपस्पृशंस्त्रिषवणमेतच्चान्द्रायणं स्मृतम्॥



अर्थात्- पूर्णमासी को 15ग्रास भोजन करे फिर प्रतिदिन क्रमशः एक एक ग्रास कृष्ण पक्ष में घटाता जाए। चतुर्दशी को एक ग्रास भोजन करे फिर शुक्ल पक्ष की प्रतिपदा से एक एक ग्रास बढ़ता हुआ पूर्णमासी को 15 ग्रास पर पहुँच जावे। इस व्रत में पूरे एक मास में कुल 240 ग्रास ग्रहण होते हैं।



(2) यव मध्य चान्द्रायण -



प्तमेव विधि कृत्स्न माचरेद्यवमध्यमे।

शक्ल पक्षादि नियतश्चरंश्चान्द्रायणं व्रतम्॥



अर्थात्- शुक्ल पक्ष की प्रतिपदा को एक ग्रास नित्य बढ़ाता हुआ पूर्णमासी को 15 ग्रास खावें। फिर क्रमशः एक एक ग्रास घटाता हुआ चतुर्दशी को 1 ग्रास खावें और अमावस को पूर्ण निराहार रहे। इस प्रकार एक मास में 240 ग्रास खावें।



(3) यति चान्द्रायण



अष्टौ अष्टौ समश्नीयात् पिण्डन् माध्यन्दिने स्थिते।

नियतात्मा हविष्याशी यति चान्द्रायणं स्मृतम्॥



अर्थात्- प्रतिदिन मध्यान्हकाल में आठ ग्रास खाकर रहें। इसे यति चांद्रायण कहते है। इससे भी एक मास में 240 ग्रास ही खाये जाते हैं।



(4) शिशु चान्द्रायण



बतुरः प्रातरश्नीयात् पिण्डान् विप्रः समाहितः।

चतुरोऽख्त मिते सूर्ये शुशुचान्द्रायणं स्मृतम्॥



अर्थात्- चार ग्रास प्रातः काल और चार ग्रास साँय काल खावें। इस प्रकार प्रतिदिन आठ ग्रास खाता हुआ एक मास में 240 ग्रास पूरे करे।

तिथि की वृद्धि तथा क्षय हो जाने पर ग्रास की भी बुद्धि तथा कमी हो जाती है। ग्रास का प्रमाण मोर के अड्डे, मुर्गी के अड्डे, तथा बड़े आँवले के बराबर माना गया है। बड़ा आँवला और मुर्गी के अंडे के बराबर प्रमाण तो साधारण बड़े ग्रास जैसा ही है। परन्तु मोर का अंडा काफी बड़ा होता है। एक अच्छी बाटी एक मोर के अंडे के बराबर ही होती है। इतना आहार लेकर तो आसानी से रहा जा सकता है। पिण्ड शब्द का अर्थ ग्रास भी किया जाता है और गोला भी। गोला से रोटी बनाने की लोई से अर्थ लिया जाता हैं यह बड़ी लोई या मोर के अंडे क प्रमाण निर्बल मन वाले लोगों के लिए भले ही ठीक हो। पर साधारणतः पिण्ड का अर्थ ग्रास ही लिया जाता है।

चान्द्रायण व्रत के दिनों में सन्ध्या, स्वाध्याय, देव पूजा, गायत्री जप, हवन आदि धार्मिक कृत्यों का नित्य नियम रखना चाहिए। भूमि शयन, एवं ब्रह्मचर्य का विधान आवश्यक है, कहीं-कहीं मुँडन करने का भी आदेश है।


प्रत्येक ग्रास का प्रथम गायत्री से अनुमंत्रण करे फिर ॐ। भूः। भूवः। स्वः। महः। जनः। तपः। सत्यं। यशः। श्रीः। अर्क। ईट। ओजः । तेजः। पुरुष। धर्म। शिवः इनके प्रारम्भ में ‘ॐ’ और अन्तः ‘नमः स्वाहा’ संयुक्त करके उस मंत्र का उच्चारण करते हुए ग्रास का भक्षण करें यथा- ‘ॐ सत्यं नमः स्वाहा’। ऊपर पंद्रह मंत्र लिखे हैं। इसमें से उतने ही प्रयोग होंगे जितने कि ग्रास भक्षण किये जायेंगे, जैसे चतुर्थी तिथि को चार ग्रास लेने हैं तो (1) ॐ नमः स्वाहा (2) ॐ भूः नमः स्वाहा (2) ॐ भूः नमः स्वाहा (3) ॐ भुवः नमः स्वाहा (4) ॐ स्वः नमः स्वाहा इन चार मंत्रों के साथ एक एक ग्रास ग्रहण किया जायगा।



व्रत की समाप्ति पर मां भगवती भोजनालय में दान दें तथा सत्साहित्य और मन्त्रलेखन पुस्तिका ज्ञान दान में बांटे है।

Asya Shri Argala stotrum mantrasya Vishnu rishih, anushtupa chandah, Shri Mahakalaxmidevata, Shri Jagadamba preetaye jape Vineeyogah.

(Meaning - Of these Argala Hymns, Shri Vishnu is the rishi (Saga), Anushtup is meter Mahalaxmi is the deity and it is recited for the love of Shri Jagadamba as a part of Sapta shati. Amen, salutations of Shri Chandika! Shri Markandeya spoke thus: )

1. Om Jayanti Mangala kali Bhadrakali Kapalini Durga Kshama Shiva dhatri swaha swadha namostute.

(Meaning : O Goddess Jayanti (who wins everyone), Mangala (who gives salvation), Kali, Bhadrakali (who is benevolent to devotees), kapalini. Durga, Kshama (who tolerates everyone) Shiva, Dhatri, Swaha and swad, salutations to you. )

2. Jai twam Devi Chamunde jai bhutartiharini, jai sarvagate Devi Kalratri namostute.
(Meaning - Victory be to you O Devi chamunda (the killer of chanda and munda) victory be to you O remover of miseries of all living beings. Victory be to you O Devi who is present every where. Salutations to you O Kalaratri (the last night). )

3. Madhu kaitabh vidravee vidravee vidyatra varde namah. Roopam dehi, jayam dehi yasho dehi, dvisho jahi.

( Meaning - Salutations to you O Devi, the killer of the demon Madhu and Kaitabha and the bestower of boons on Shri Brahmadeva. Please give us the spiritual personality, the victory, the glory and destroy our enemies. )

4. Mahishashura nirnashi bhaktanam sukhade namah. Roopam dehi, jayam dehi yasho dehi, dvisho jahi.

(Meaning - Salutations to you O Devi, the killer of Mahishasura and giver of happiness to your devotees. Please give us the spiritual personality, the victory, the glory and destroy our enemies. )

5. Raktabeej vadhe Devi chandamunda vinashini. Roopam dehi, jayam dehi yasho dehi, dvisho jahi.

(Meaning - O Devi, the killer of Raktabeeja and destroyer of demons Chanda and Munda. Please give us the spiritual personality, the victory, the glory and destroy our enemies. )

6. Shumbhasya-aiva nishumbhasya dhoomra-akshasya cha mardini. Roopam dehi, jayam dehi yasho dehi, dvisho jahi.

(Meaning : O Devi, the killer of demons Shumbha, Nishumba and Dhumraksha. Please give us the spiritual personality, the victory, the glory and destroy our enemies. )

7. Vanditanghri-yuge Devi sarva saubhagya dayini. Roopam dehi, jayam dehi yasho dehi, dvisho jahi.

(Meaning - O Devi, whose lotus feet are worshipped by gods and who gives good fortune. Please give us the spiritual personality, the victory, the glory and destroy our enemies. )

8. Achintya-roopa-charite sarva shatru vinashini. Roopam dehi, jayam dehi yasho dehi, dvisho jahi.

(Meaning - O Devi, whose form and character are beyond mind and who destroys all the enemies. Please give us the spiritual personality, the victory, the glory and destroy our enemies. )

9. Natebhyam sarvada bhaktaya chandike duritapahe. Roopam dehi, jayam dehi yasho dehi, dvisho jahi.

(Meaning - O Devi, Chandika, the destroyer of sufferings, please give those who always humble before you in devotion, the spiritual personality, the victory, the glory and destroy the enemies. )

10. Stuvadabhyo bhakti-poorva-twam chandike Yyadhi-nashini. Roopam dehi, jayam dehi yasho dehi, dvisho jahi.

(Meaning - O Devi chandika the destroyer of all diseases, please give to the devotees, who praise you with devotion, the spiritual personality, the victory, the glory and destroy their enemies. )

11. Chandike satatam ye twam archyanteeh bhaktitah. Roopam dehi, jayam dehi yasho dehi, dvisho jahi.

(Meaning - O Devi Chandika, please, give those, who always worship you with devotion in this world, the spiritual personality, the victory, the glory and destroy their enemies. )

12. Dehi saubhagyam-arogyam dehi, me param. Roopam dehi, jayam dehi yasho dehi, dvisho jahi.

(Meaning - O Devi, please give us good fortune, health, complete happiness, spiritual personality, the victory, the glory and destroy our enemies. )

13. Vidhehi dvishtam nasham vidhehi bala-muchchakeh. Roopam dehi, jayam dehi yasho dehi, dvisho jahi.

(Meaning - O Devi, please destroy those who hate your devotees, give me strength, the spiritual personality, the victory, the glory and destroy our enemies. )

14. Vidhehi Devi kalyanam vidhehi paramam shriyama. Roopam dehi, jayam dehi yasho dehi, dvisho jahi.

(Meaning - O Devi, please confer upon us the benevolence, great wealth, the spiritual personality, the victory, the glory and destroy our enemies. )

15. Surasur-Shiroratna nighrashti-charane ambike. Roopam dehi, jayam dehi yasho dehi, dvisho jahi.

(Meaning - O Devi Ambika, your lotus feet are rubbed by the gems of the crowns worn by Gods and demons. Please bestow upon us the spiritual personality, the victory, the glory and destroy our enemies. )

16. Vidyavantam yashasvantam laxmivantam janam kuru. Roopam dehi, jayam dehi yasho dehi, dvisho jahi.

(Meaning - O Devi, please make your devotees knowledgeable, glorified and wealthy and give us the spiritual personality, the victory, the glory and destroy their enemies. )

17. Prachanda-daitya-darpaghne chandike pranataya me. Roopam dehi, jayam dehi yasho dehi, dvisho jahi.

(Meaning - O Devi, the destroyer of the ego of ferocious demons. O Chandike! Please give us the spiritual personality, the victory, the glory and destroy our enemies. )

18. Chaturbhuje chaturvaktra samstute parameshwari. Roopam dehi, jayam dehi yasho dehi, dvisho jahi.

(Meaning - O Parameshwari (The supreme Goddess) having four arms and who is praised by four-faced one (Brahmadeva) please give us the spiritual personality, the victory, the glory and destroy our enemies. )

19. Krishnen samstute Devi shashvad-bhaktya sada ambike. Roopam dehi, jayam dehi yasho dehi, dvisho jahi.

(Meaning - O Devi Ambika, who is ever praised with all devotion by Shri Krishna, please give us the spiritual personality, the victory, the glory and destroy our enemies.)

20. Himachal-sutanath-samstute parmeshwari. Roopam dehi, jayam dehi yasho dehi, dvisho jahi.

(Meaning - O Parameshwari, (The supreme Goddess) who is praised by the husband of the daughter of Himalayas (Shri Shiva) please give us the spiritual personality, the victory, the glory and destroy our enemies. )

21. Indranipati-sadbhava-poojite parmeshwari. Roopam dehi, jayam dehi yasho dehi, dvisho jahi.

(Menaing - O Parameshwari, who is worshipped with true feelings by the husband of Indrani (Indra) please give us the spiritual personality, the victory, the glory and destroy our enemies. )

22. Devi prachanda-dornanda-daitya darpa-vinashini. Roopam dehi, jayam dehi yasho dehi, dvisho jahi.

(Meaning - O Devi, the destroyer of pride of demons by your strong arms please give us the spiritual personality, the victory, the glory and destroy our enemies. )

23. Devi bhakta-jana-uddam-datta-anand-udai-ambike. Roopam dehi, jayam dehi yasho dehi, dvisho jahi.

(Meaning - O Devi Ambika, you enlighten the supreme joy (moksha) of your devotees, please give us the spiritual personality, the victory, the glory and destroy our enemies. )

24. Patnim manoramam dehi manovritta-anusarineema. Tarineem durga-samsar-sagarasya kula udbhawama.

(Meaning - O Devi! please give me the wife, who is pleasing to mind, who goes according to the mind (obedient) and who can cross the most difficult of worldly ocean and who comes from a good family. )
