Summer might be on its way but we felt things were getting just a little too ‘nice’ over at X-Kalay HQ. There’s been bare palm tree emojis flying around for time now and not enough hammers, sickles, cheap fags and Adidas tracksuits mate. 

Next up for XK008 we present mysterious Russian newcomer, Diego Tierres and his Solar Winds EP. Based in St Petersburg he’s served us up four of the toughest warehouse burners you’re likely to hear this side of the iron curtain. Proper raw material; this is straight out the furnace, blow your doors off, no prisoners shit.

Sequenced on an enviable collection of Roland rhythm boxes, Casio synthesizers and shot to pieces Tascam recorders there isn’t a computer within a 10 mile radius of Diego Tierres’ gaff. Tracks overdubbed to within an inch of their lives, smoke pouring out the Mackie; total carnage ensues in the Leningrad bunker. 

Layers of weirded out sputnik sci-fi melodies drift over blown out drums and gnarled basslines. Reminiscent of the windy city circa “92 but with a notably more menacing edge… These are obnoxious tape jams for the disenchanted, bombs for the yout, weapons for the perturbed; pressed up onto heavyweight 180g fresh black wax. Play em loud and take cover.

Lou Karsh’s massive 2018 “Ataraxia” EP gets a repress this spring with a fresh B2! 

“Ataraxia” opens the A side and sets the tone with a huge off beat kick and sparse 909 drums. Neatly evolving through swelling pads and a sculpted 303 there’s something not too distant from the emotive power of early 808 State coupled with the lucid basslines of Phuture. “Infrared” is all punchy drums and crisp breaks shrouded in melancholic pad work and wistful melody… Recorded in one take the spontaneity bleeds into the groove, lead perfectly by a truly elastic bassline.
 
On the flip, “Robotnik” is a definite label favourite. Channelling the stripped back styles of early Jack Frost and the Acid Trax compilations, with a nod to their contemporaries Paranoid London; this one is red hot. “Wasp Tracking” is the new cut – a pacey, buzzing 4x4 acid work out aimed squarely at the floor.
