It is always our pleasure to have new talents in the house, and we’ve been following Notzing’s development since long ago. His approach to techno is absolutely personal and complex, hard and intrincated, mental and physical. Protae is the first missile in this box full of weapons, a super busy techno exercise with compacted drums, drilling synth lines and random metallic hits breaking the monotony. The effect on the floor is devastating and has been tested extensively in dancefloors worldwide by label owner Oscar Mulero in the past months. 7 minutes of pure dancefloor mayhem. Fagus continues with the sickness, with hysterical synth washe repeating an hypnotic chant, adding layers of sound as the groove goes by. Repetition is here the key to proper trance, not exactly with pleasant tones but by aggression. Ekaterin is gummy and elastic with formant synth sounds chewing frequencies and changing constantly in shape. Another mental mantra with a physical drive. Molniya slows down the pace and dives into profound sound scapes full of unnatural underwater sounds and washes providing a feeling of scuba diving. To end this sonic odyssey, Emision goes completely beatless, growing from the profound sub bass frequencies to crispy and crunchy surface noises, creating the soundtrack of floating in outer space with no gravity. Please beware of the super intense bass tones when playing on a big sound system. The perfect combination of experimentation and punchiness, keep an eye on this guy, is gonna make some proper noise in the coming years.

Active for nearly three decades, Japanese DJ and producer Takaaki Itoh has been carving out a niche truly his own in the realm of deep techno. Pumping out multi-sensory DJ tools for breakfast, Itoh champions a sound highly dynamic yet infused with the kind of minute textural work and layers of modular complexity one can not but marvel at. Punching in with a wild two hours of electro-magnetic hardware funk and entrancingly immersive brainwaves, the Sendai-based wizard elevates us to a whole new world where hi-tech submersion and atmospheric club music reign supreme. A work of art.

For my return to Open Ground, I had the idea to record my full set and post it online. Nothing can really describe that club, the sound system, the room accoustics, the way everything has been designed just breathes passion and dedication. Just amazing crew and always a treat to come back there.
The vibe there was absolutely amazing, and I guess you really just have to experience it on the spot to really get what it's like. 

But yea, here's the 3h30 journey we've embarked on there this 8th May, and I hope you enjoy it !

We fell for Datashader – the mysterious new signing to Tresor – the moment we heard their six track ‘Digital Entropy’ EP, with its combination of caustic electro, tough techno and breakbeat japes. So when the enigmatic entity offered to do a In The Mix session for us, we naturally jumped at the chance.  The results... well, they span from Sub Sub and Gary Numan to Eprom, AFX and Autechre and much, much more…

Stepping up with the hypnotic, heavy-duty wares all set at knocking your senses askew, Belgian producer Peter Van Hoesen lands us a monster of a live set. Responsible for some seriously mind-expanding sorties on the likes of Tresor, Vlek and his self-operated outlets Time To Express & Center 91 over the past 15 years, Van Hoesen has established himself as one of the scene’s driving forces when it comes to integrating these cinematic ambiences into an effervescing mesh of pulsating 4x4 rhythms and a millefeuille of layered envelopes acting like quicksands. Recorded on the occasion of his latest live performance at Tresor Berlin on May 10, this particular live harnesses that deep-diving energy elemental to Van Hoesen’s intricate engineering of hi-velocity dynamics and rippling dub interplays, ushering us headlong into a bright, merciless furnace of sound. "They were wild and crazy years." The Spanish techno icon discusses his early years in Madrid, running record labels and staying true to his sound for more than 30 years.

Spanish DJ and producer Oscar Mulero is a legend of underground techno. Since starting to play parties and make music more than 30 years ago, he's earned a reputation as an anti-conformist tastemaker who's adamantly stuck to his guns. While his trajectory began with Madrid's goth and punk clubs in the '90s, he eventually found techno in the early '00s and started two labels, PoleGroup and Warm Up, as homes for the hypnotic, spaced-out sound that's become his signature. 

In this RA Exchange, Mulero reflects on the early days of the Spanish techno scene and how it's evolved, as well as his own roots and influences. Today, the artist is as active as he's ever been, he discusses how he's maintained longevity as an artist in the face of changing trend, as well as his best practices for making music at home and on the road. Ahead of this weekend’s Bassiani booking, Berghain resident Fadi Mohem delivers a masterful blend of large scale rhythms for Bassiani Podcast 247. Raised in the leafy suburb of Spandau, the native Berliner always had the very best of nightlife within easy reach: exposure to drum ‘n’ bass, Detroit, the dubby incarnations of Basic Channel and IDM meting out references for a personal distillation of sound that saw him go from techno acolyte and sound engineering student to folk mainstay in just a few years. A stint at cult vinyl purveyor Hard Wax and the tutelage and encouragement of Ben Klock (they met in 2016) have permeated his work even further. From his alma mater to Dekmantel and beyond, his is a lexicon comprised of rhythmic loops and heavily stylised snarls that ripple, echo and penetrate the body; a catalyst for mental and physical experience that’s forward-looking and deeply intuitive. This latest one’s a 92 minute compilation of Mohem’s favourite sounds, an avatar for his high-concept sonic palette, assembly line beats from this nonpareil Berlin selector.

James Sigha resurrects his Faugust alias for ‘Parallel Rave Fantasies’, released this Friday 21st June. To celebrate the release we asked James to submit a mix for Bleep.

The Faugust project is Sigha’s place to experiment with his formative influences, leaning heavily on his early experiences with electronic music and placing them within the context of his contemporary production and sound design work.

His mix follows suit and traverses plenty of abstract techno, deconstructed pop and rhythmically complex paths. Something to get lost in.
