"Airplane"

Kat Blackwood was a born musician; humming herself to sleep in her crib in her hometown of Ft. Worth, Texas. From grade school through college, Kat sang in several choirs, with her mind always set on improving and toning her voice. Growing up she had been heavily influenced by classic rock and big-voice musicians, such as Grace Slick, Stevie Nicks, Janis Joplin, Aretha Franklin and Etta James. Her biggest musical influence turns out to be her brother, who is also a professional musician.

On a rainy Sunday in 2011, Kat picked up a ukulele and instantly fell in love. Within a day, she had taught herself eight songs on the ukulele and began creating her own songs which would lead to recording her first album, "The Good Has Won." The title track of the album also landed on a nationally airing Crayola television commercial and has also been nominated for an Independent Music Award. 

Kat began as an indie pop artist, a style that heavily influenced the production of her first album "The Good Has Won." However, she's recently begun gravitating towards a more mature sound - a sound that people have described as Janis Joplin meets Adele. Kat wants to be an artist who makes her listeners think. She wants to make people ask questions. She wants to make people feel. She's ready to put everything out there and not apologize for it. 

Kat's first album, "The Good Has Won," is available on iTunes now under her legal name Julia McKinnis. Although Kat doesn't plan to keep on the path of pop music, she's still proud of her first album full of endearing, heart-warming tunes.
