Hackney Colliery Band need very little introduction. Since the release of their eponymous debut in 2011, this brass juggernaut have blown their way into the public consciousness, as well as some of the more discerning dance floors, with their cunning cover versions (in particular Africa and No Diggity) and catchy original recordings. 

Over the past two years the band have earned themselves an army of loyal fans, including a number of big names, and have played at some very special events indeed. From live collaborations with the late Amy Winehouse and more recently Eliza Doolittle, to headlining the Manchester Jazz and Durham Brass Festivals, and in 2012 being the only fully live band to play at the Closing Ceremony of the London Olympics, they haven’t paused for breath. 

Add to that an ongoing partnership with the Roundhouse, a recent Balkan tour where they played to capacity crowds in Slovenia, Kosovo and Montenegro and relentless touring in the UK and Europe, and it becomes obvious why the critics have described them as 'an inspired musical collision' (The Times), 'one of our favourite performers on the London scene today' (The Upcoming) and 'the most enjoyable, fun live music I know of’ (The Observer).

With a tongue-in-cheek, yet respectful, nod to the great tradition of British brass bands, Hackney Colliery's influences are as diverse as the London borough that gave them their name. Mixing rock, afro-beat, hip hop, Balkan beats, contemporary jazz and soul, the new album Common Decency is a uniquely British take on the modern brass band sound. The opener, A Bit Of Common Decency, builds from a delicately brooding intro to an almost punky rock groove, and with its imploring whispers and shouts for 'a bit of common decency' sets the tone of the album: by turns polite and forceful, mellow and fiery, energetic and, well, even more energetic. By the closing track, Prodigy Medley (a favourite of club and radio DJs all over the world), the listener can be left with little doubt that HCB’s time has come.

Engineered by the appropriately-named Tristan Hackney (Katy B, Bjork, U2) and mixed by Luke Buttery (Mark Ronson, Alice Russell, Noel Gallagher) at Ray Davies' Konk studios in North London, Common Decency was recorded almost entirely 'as live' with the band all playing in the same room at the same time; a rare and high-risk method indeed, but the only one that could hope to capture the energy and passion of one of HCB's live shows. 

Fortunately, with musicians whose credits include the likes of Bonobo, Cinematic Orchestra and even the Royal Opera House, there was no danger of this compromising the quality or detail of the performances. Add a little extra honk from Melt Yourself Down and Acoustic Ladyland head honcho Pete Wareham on the track Superhero Disco and there is no shortage of virtuoso playing. Which is lucky, because HCB aren't a simple 'brass n beats' groove band. Writers Olly Blackman, Luke Christie and Steve Pretty have between them penned unquestionably the outfit's strongest material to date ¬– powerful original compositions that sit alongside unexpected drum n bass, soul and hip hop covers; a tour de force of screaming energy and masterly writing. As intricate as it is energetic, as virtuosic as it is passionate, Common Decency marks HCB's arrival as a leading light in the global brass band scene.

As front-man Steve Pretty puts it, "When we started out back in 2008 our mission was to create a uniquely British take on the modern brass band and to prove that with nothing but some bits of twisted metal, wood and plastic we could get any party started. We've had an incredible couple of years and Common Decency is the realisation of those ambitions”.

'Power Bossa' is the introduction to Fab Samperi's definition of a boombastic jazz style. Fearlessly and creatively picking up inspiration from the golden decades of classic rhythm & blues, latin, hip-hop and soul Sicily's most prolific producer releases his first full album:
'Power Bossa' and what a powerful statement it really is. Fab Samperi recorded the album in as many as six countries. While kicking off with 'In The River', playlisted on the BBC and sealed by Craig Charles featuring the man Samperi himself on flute (yes, he is a well-studied multi-instrumentalist playing keyboards, drums, guitars and brass!) the mighty John Turrell from Newcastle England puts his distinctive northern soul voice on 'Everyman'. Samperi's close connection to Smoove & Turrell is no coincidence. With their organic approach to the music they love this is a natural connection. Bella Wagner from Vienna, vocalist on 'Stand Back', already recorded with Patrick Pulsinger and Bahama Soul Club. Jonnathan Molina on the other hand is a new face on the block. His voice for 'Listen Up' keeps the fire burning with an authentic soul twist.
'Red Bossa' is a liaison with Mattew Rasbash aka Spasmo, an English producer with an incredible knowledge of cinematic jazz, dramatic bossa and obscure jazz-rock. Holding the pace but adding a breathless rap flavour to 'Brand New Day' Joelistics aka Joel Ma of the Australian TZU crew takes us back to the age when hip-hop was what it all was about: lyrical vitality, an open mind and pure energy. The instrumental version of 'Alcoholic Drinks' is a trip way back into Fab Samperi's history, but it still sounds fresh today. It blends nicely into 'Jazz Di Mezzaluna', an authentic piece of Mediterranean Jazz featuring a solo by Andrea Beneventano, one of the national top players on the piano. Rounding up this jazz intermezzo on 'Power Bossa' is 'Spaghetti Samba', Samperi's early single on Record Kicks featuring the vocals of Igor Gazatti aka Zion from Recife in Brazil. Soul brother John Turrell makes his return on 'Heaven Sent', again this was recorded with Smoove at his Ashbrooke Castle studios in downtown Newcastle.
'BB Funk' kicks in with a haunting bass line courtesy of the man Fab Samperi himself: 'People think there is a lot of sampling in my music, but it is not. This bassline, for example, was played and written completely by myself.' And while Samperi is not only an expert musician himself, he is also busy remixing tunes for other artists. The French freakbeat of 'Papillonne Sur Moi' is an example of his recent output, commissioned by fellow Italians Montefiori Cocktail & In-Grid.
Closing the album Samperi reunites with Andrew Donikian aka Diamond Poet and revives the Outbound era with 'When I Wake Up.' The music may have evolved since then, but the message in Fab Samperi's music has not: 'The message behind it is that I believe in a multicultural world, where people can live their lives in peace, with no racism, and no war.' This statement is as simple as it is true: Peace, love, unity and having bossa!

Funkyjaws Music keeps on keeping on with its Let's Dance series, which now hits volume number three. It is another doozy that follows the tradition of bringing together four different and equally able artists on one 12". Jacques Renault kicks off with some funky and disco-fried fun on 'Such A Tease' and The Patchouli Brothers take it old school with their steamy disco burner 'Wishin' U Would Call.' The flipside keeps the good vibes alive with some lovely cowbell action and mad-funky riffs on Paul Older's 'Dancin' On Your Mind' and then a little steamy psyched-out guitar magic defines the glorious closer 'House Of Rising Sun.'

Delighted to be asked to remix Matuki, one my favourite bands in Bristol these days.  The musicians on this recording were so damn funky I repeatedly found myself dancing at my desk for extended periods of time with very little progress on the actual remix being made! But I just about managed to fight off the funk and power on through to combine their 2 part track  'Injo' and reprise 'Injo Badingkolo' into this funky 11 minute afro-beast! It has been 10 years since Fort Knox Five released their first singles, and this past decade has proven very fruitful for the funky foursome. 2003 saw the launch of both Fort Knox Five and their seminal Fort Knox Recordings imprint. To celebrate this milestone, Fort Knox Five have selected 15 of their favorite original tracks from the entire decade.

Fort Knox Five has had the pleasure of collaborating with some incredible vocalists who are well represented on this collection. Mustafa Akbar of Thunderball and Nappy Riddem is featured on several tracks, as are Rootz and Zeebo of See-I and Thievery Corporation. The Godfather of Electro Funk himself, Afrika Bambaataa is featured on two tracks. Asheru, best known for his Boondocks theme song is on the opening track. Thievery Corporation’s dancehall voice, Sleepy Wonder as well as DC’s own DIY legend Ian Svenonius are both featured. The list continues with former US3 front-man and prolific artist Akil Dasan and the Zulu Nation’s King Kamonzi. Rounding out the list of featured vocalists is Beta-G, on loan from the US Department of Bhangra.

This body of music not only spans 10 years of Fort Knox Five in the studio, but also live performances and dj appearances worldwide. This music has been performed and played for countless thousands of fans around the globe. These tunes have also been heard in such great movies as The Cove (2010 Academy Award Winner), Stand Up Guys and You Again as well as TV shows like The Fringe. No stranger to the wide world of video games, Fort Knox Five songs have appeared on Need For Speed: Shift, Skate It, NBA Live 10, Test Drive Unlimited 2, Dirt 3, Sims and others.

10 Years of Fort Knox Five shows the music diversity of the group with one foot firmly planted in funk. Reggae and dub can be heard clearly alongside hip-hop. The group is not afraid to break boundaries and delve into rock, swing and even bhangra in their musical explorations. This collection of music represents the last decade of Fort Knox Five’s musical growth and development.
