KIYOZUMIPRIMES

No one truly knows what stands behind this name. Some say it was found in an old archive where every record looked scorched from the inside. Others claim it’s a cipher, a mark left on things that were never meant to make a sound. Its first appearance happened at night - not on air, not online, but somewhere in the in-between. People reported hearing a strange rhythm where it couldn’t exist: inside the hum of ventilation, in the overload of a dying transformer, in the static between stations. The sound felt alive, as if something was trying to break through, but doing it carefully. Everyone who encountered the phenomenon describes the same thing: the melody seemed human… yet something else stood behind it. Cold. Breathing. Too close. And the strangest part - it never repeated itself. As if the source reacted to the listener, adjusted itself, whispered in rhythm with their own fears. Later, some began to insist that KIYOZUMIPRIMES is not a band, not a project, but an echo - a remnant of someone’s will stuck between states. Sometimes it manifests as music, sometimes as interference, sometimes as a voice with no body. But the most important thing is this: no one has ever seen the ones behind it. Not once. And still, the sound keeps appearing - clinging to devices, to empty rooms, to silence. They say that if you hear it once - it hears you back.

Joining Caroline Records recording artists Drop Nineteens as their lead guitarist, Justin Crosby's journey into the music industry began in the spring of 1993. The "Nineteens" were one of a few US-based bands who styled themselves on England's distinctive shoegazer sound. The band would ultimately lead the UK Indie Album and Singles charts with formal releases after signing to Caroline Records, (label home to Smashing Pumpkins, Hole, White Zombie, and countless other trend setting artists of their day.) They lead several European and domestic tours with 43 performances, both domestic and abroad. They were featured as Blur's supporting act on a 2 week US tour, shared the stage with Radiohead, Flaming Lips and Mazzy Star at England's Reading Festival, and headlined Lollapalooza's second stage at Waterloo in 1993.

From his days as a touring musician, Crosby can now be found composing music for a wide range television shows, independent films, Video Games and online media. His music can be heard in prime time TV hits on networks ranging from ABC, NBC & CBS, to SHOWTIME, BBC & Channel 4 UK. Crosby is credited as the percussion programmer for Daniel Licht's brilliantly eerie score of Silent Hill 8: Downpour, (Konami), and programming additional percussion beds for several seasons of Showtime's smash hit Dexter. Television music credits range from "Blackish" (ABC), "Castle" (ABC), "Do No Harm" (NBC), to "Deception" (NBC), "CSI Miami" (CBS), and "Top Gear" (BBC).

Difficult to pinpoint stylistically, Animal Holograms are an elusive trio. High intensity, complex songs are balanced out by hypnotic, minimalist pieces often carried by Arabic and African based rhythms.

The captivating feel of "Psychoasis" carry things on an atmospheric whirlwind that channels the spirits of Mercury Rev and The Flaming Lips while the synth drenched sounds of "Ferdinand Hodler" give way to an upbeat yet overall darker tone. It's a brilliant balance of both moody and uplifting territory. This mood continues with the dirge like grind of "Hello Mr. Dark" which at some point moves into a delightful realm of shoegaze bliss. "Somewhere between the vocal stylings of Marc Bolan and Elliott Smith, Jason Williams’ voice is a hypnotic and understated element of Animal Holograms, a Chicago-based trio with a dreamily loose sound that blends shoegaze and dream-pop. What started as a solo project of Williams’ evolved into a trio consisting of Nick Biscardi and Jesse Askren. Now, Animal Holograms have their debut full-length - í sólina – slated for a May release. Judging by already-released tracks like ”lengi nætur”, listeners could be in for something special.

Starting with a progression that resembles both spacious post-rock and spaghetti-western nonchalance, ”lengi nætur” immediately shows Animal Holograms’ knack for atmosphere. Williams’ ghostly croon creeps in over the passive percussion and murmuring guitars, while an organ emerges as a bridge to a successfully clanky hook that is capped off by an elongated guitar solo. Much of the lyrics throughout the track are obscured somewhat by the gently involved production, which surely takes a cue from shoegaze. The actual instrumentation is more in the vein of post-punk and alternative, with a touch of glam-rock’s moodier bits. ”lengi nætur” is a great entry for listeners, as are tracks like ”halló dökk mín”."

Jangle-pop powerhouse The Blue Herons are back with their fifth single Take Them Back which will be released Friday, November 19. This single is an upbeat, 80s-influenced jangle-pop tune with a hint of melancholy and a driving chorus that invites repeat listens. With Andy Jossi’s lustrous and Marr-esque guitars and Gretchen DeVault’s soaring vocals and luscious harmonies, Take Them Back is a song anyone who has been wounded by words can relate to.

The Blue Herons are a jangle-pop duo that calls to mind guitar riffs reminiscent of C86, and Sarah Records bands like Even as We Speak and Heavenly, with infectious melodies and soaring vocals that easily sit alongside the likes of current artists Alvvays, Hatchie and Hazel English. 

The Blue Herons are Andy Jossi (The Churchhill Garden, The Serpent Garden) and Gretchen DeVault (The Icicles, The Francine Odysseys, Voluptuous Panic), a serendipitous collision of two indie-pop masterminds. After establishing a following for his shoegaze band The Churchhill Garden, Jossi needed a separate space for his indie-pop songs. The Blue Herons featured frequent guest vocalists and musicians such as Krissy Vanderwoude (The Churchhill Garden, Whimsical), Marty Willson Piper (The Church, All About Eve), Hideka and Thierry Haliniak. Jossi began releasing music under The Blue Herons moniker, still searching for the perfect vocal complement to his instrumentals. In October 2020, he found just that in DeVault. 

DeVault, a veteran of the indie pop scene, led The Icicles through a series of well-received albums and licensing deals with Target and Motorola in the early 2000s. In 2013, she elevated her recording skills and vocals to new heights as half of the transoceanic shoegazer duo Voluptuous Panic. After relocating to LA in 2016, she got reacquainted with her indie pop roots and formed The Francine Odysseys.
