Katie Rex has made a name foraying fine-tuned taste-making and honing in on multimedia artistry to create a multifaceted curatorial career. With roots beginning in the Philadelphia rave and basement scenes, her passion for the underground has crossed genre boundaries and culminated into an in-depth knowledge of music and cultural trends. Rex’s DJ sets fuse ceiling busting rave anthems into techno, with groove and edge. She's shared the bill with top artists across genres, staying true to her passion for progressive sounds. In the fine art sphere, she’s done activations with David LaChapelle, Tom of Finland, Elizaveta Porodina, Kia Labeija, For Freedoms, Ethan James Green, and more. She holds club residencies in New York City at Basement with BOUND and Le Bain for Midnite Request Line.

Rex’s infamous event series turned multifaceted lifestyle platform, BOUND, has received international acclaim with features from VOGUE, The New York Times, Vice, Resident Advisor, and many more. Beginning with the celebration of sex work and a need for safer spaces highlighting hedonistic enjoyment, BOUND has reached an audience that transcends any one location. They host events in New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Austin, DC, San Francisco, Philadelphia, & Detroit. Beyond the party, BOUND functions as a radio show on The Lot Radio, produces the Fetishwear Catalog (forthcoming Fall 2024), and has released tracks from Dax J, Kontravoid, Terence Fixmer, Jasmine Infiniti, Silent Servant, Bored Lord, Kilbourne, and more.

BOUND 001: Katie Rex

In the mid-2000s a rock revolution was emerging. Bands like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs were making their way to the ears of suburban teens, emo & hardcore had stretched its reach to become the sound of social network culture, and pop radio was embracing The Strokes. The electronic influence of the 90s had been left to the wayside with the popularization and destruction of rave culture in the US.

As a teenager, historically like most others, I had an escapist attitude. Stereotypically keeping angst as my primary MO and relying on the sounds of Nine Inch Nails, Depeche Mode, and the trashy broken synthesizers of Mindless Self Indulgence, to relate with my experience. Some acquaintances directed my group of 11th grade misfits to a party in West Philly in the basement of a church, which served as a cafeteria to elementary school students on the weekdays. This was “God’s Basement.”

Every few weeks there would be an event littered with light-up pacifiers, junglists, UFO pants, candy ravers, and curious college students. While other parties came and went, God’s Basement stood its ground as the home of this community drawing crowds to experience a mix of Happy Hardcore, Drum & Bass (fit with MCs), Hardstyle, Breakbeats, and whatever other micro-genres under one roof. I quickly traded in my bondage pants and studded bracelets for homemade tutus and pony-beads, my friends names changed from Morgan to StarGazer, and my life revolved around the Philadelphia rave circuit. Weekdays became just as busy as the weekends in preparation. Once a week I would go down to South 4th St. to 611 Records and check for new flyers before scouring through the fabric stores for cheap animal prints and tulle to ensure an on-theme outfit. My friends and I would drive for hours listening to the mix CDs we picked up from DJs at the parties, turning us all into fans… myself being enthralled by the cartoonish synthetic bliss of UK Hardcore and, in contrast, the intensity of Hardstyle. This is the music I found my first love to and subsequently commiserated with my first heartbreak. Through this terribly romanticized view of my life as a teenager, I should mention that I was seeing everything through dinner plate eyes the entire time... taking so much acid I still find my sober mind trailing off mid-sentence into another dimension.

By the time God’s Basement got an undercover feature on NBC, the people I was partying with had either migrated to the more fashionable and accessible “Blog House” or…. Burning Man culture. I somehow did both. The only relevant casualty now is my upper-thigh, which was the recipient of a trashy drug-related tattoo.

This mixtape isn’t a collection of “bests,” a comprehensive list of originals, or a public masturbation of knowledge… this is a memoire of the most exciting and trashy time of my life thus far… Thanks to Sarah Toon of The LASH in Downtown LA, for re-inspiring.
