This song is about trying to spend more time on the things and with the people that make you (and them) thrive. Its about the struggles of getting out of habits of inaction, wasting time on the stuff that doesnt matter, instead of spending time engaging in more life enhancing moments. These habits and compulsions to pay attention to the worthless are difficult to shift. They can form deep cut thin lines in our minds that are hard to notice and even more difficult to escape from. The song culminates in an instrumental outro which echoes the positive feeling of breaking free into the 'flow' state and finding yourself thriving on life...kinda the way I felt when I was playing it. I hope you enjoy it.

In Every Dream Home A Heartache is a Roxy Music classic. Lyrically, the song is a sinister monologue, part critique of the emptiness of opulence, partly a love song to an inflatable doll. This is a Trap style remix.

Dreaming A Heartache

Atlanta’s “Bog Witch” and Boise’s “Mystic Tape Deck” announce the release of a new collaborative single, “Dogs of Chernobyl” to mark the anniversary of the Chernobyl Disaster.

Following the April 26, 1986 nuclear accident, the City of Pripyat was evacuated. The residents were forced to leave their pets (including domestic dogs) behind.  

Nearly 40 years after the accident, the descendants of these dogs are still living in the Exclusion Zone and a study is currently taking place. 

Scientists are sampling the DNA of the dogs. Apparently, their DNA is irregular in some interesting ways.

Wendy writes “I couldn’t sleep one night and picked-up my phone to surf when I noticed an article about the radioactive dogs of Chernobyl.  Right away it seemed like a song.”  

Wendy invited Mystic Tape Deck to collaborate with her in creating the sonic pallet for this song, the proceeds from all sales of which will be donated to the Clean Futures Fund. 

The Clean Futures Fund relies upon donations to provide medical supplies, vaccines, and food for the dogs living in the Exclusion Zone.

Rodolfo https://soundcloud.com/rplanes first shared this beautiful piece with me 2 years ago, which has had a gradual development since I first wrote the lyrics back then. More recently Ce Mastro https://soundcloud.com/cemastro added some exciting backing vocals which transformed the chorus and then even more recently we invited Dave McKeown https://soundcloud.com/dave-mckeown to contribute some lovely sax that we believed was just what the song needed. Rodolfo's song has such a feeling of romantic innocence yet with a wonderful rhythmic flow, that I hoped the words might feel from a simpler time. We hope you all enjoy our song of innocence (and inexperience) which thankfully is a work of fiction. Thanks again to Rodolfo for sharing this magical piece and his great skills as well as Ce and Dave's unique gifts to make this one happen.

This is the 7th song posted from the album I have been working on using demo tracks given to me by Wou-Wou & the Wormling during the start of the pandemic! I can't believe how fast time has passed and how long we have been working on this project. 4 songs from the album are based on a graphic novel that Wou-Wou had started before the pandemic began. The rest of the songs are reflections of the weird times we were living in.

Big thanks to Wou Wou, Bit-zone, and Stricknice for still being here after all these years. I have known and worked with people on SoundCloud probably longer than I have known high school friends, college friends, and friends from various jobs. Huge thanks to Guitar Wizards of the Future. I remember when I first began participating in the SoundCloud community, I would always eagerly anticipate a new GWOTF track, especially because I grew up in Oakland California. Over the past few years, Carlos (https://soundcloud.com/carlosvivanco-1, https://carlosvivanco1.bandcamp.com/) has helped me navigate a mountain of information on music theory, and taught me some basics on playing the piano as well. Our collaborations are always a great opportunity to cement those ideas into sounds. 

For our 5th collaboration, he sent me a very cool Harmonic Cadence foundation (piano, cello, drums and xylophone), moving the tonalities by 5ths along the way. He also explained that all I needed to do was refer to my lessons on Minor Pentatonics and transitioning by 5ths to fill in the gaps appropriately. I’m thrilled to actually understand what that means now. :) 

Plus, he provides me creative counting methods (that I might otherwise overlook). This is an 8/8 song, but the count is 1 2 3 1 2 3 1 2; so I get to use mathematics to place my notes at key points along that count. I get to combine the best of both worlds (mathematics and creativity) into one space… and that’s a lot of fun. 

So Carlos, thanks for being such a positive influence in my life. I’ve learned so much from you. I am truly grateful for your time, your teachings, and your friendship. I love working with you, and I love how this song turned out.
