Slow Fly - Let's Try

*This is a binaural mix of the original version which was composed for a 29 spearker array. The music is best listened to on headphones.*

The title of this piece refers to my friend Bill (Brunson) and composer Jim Tenney (the reference in the title being to his piece "For Ann, Rising") both of whom have been incredibly important to me. The basic musical idea behind this composition is to use a simple synthesis model and create timbral variations through combining repetitions of the original sound. The tonality and the rhythms are both derived from a 7-limit, 11-note scale. In the piece rhythms are treated as slowed down intervals and vice versa.

For Bill, Rising

This is the very first work I did with the Buchla and Serge systems at EMS in Stockholm. It was done intermittantly, during sporadic visits, between 2008 and 2010. I was exploring how the violin work I was doing could meet and meld with these marvelous devices, and first learning how to use them at the same time. It is loosely based on the form of an Ayin (the musical form of a Sema ceremony performed by whirling dervishes, which music I was privileged to play a little bit of for a time with people I really respected and liked). Although it is very formative and I lacked a great deal of technical knowledge at that time, I have decided to include it here with my other work with synthesis and electro-acoustic music from Stockholm and EMS.

New Love Music is a piece for electronics and LED-lights. Its based on sounds from the cither, sinus waves and a choir of friends. 

This is just a short extract of the piece. Whole duration is about 40 minutes.

For some time now I have been working with old reel to reel tape machines to record and make music. I am at last starting to produce sounds that I am happy with. This was recorded using a Nagra 4.2 Mono reel to reel tape machine, then mixed using the Reaper audio program. I offer it as a piece for the new year, new decade and new world. Global human society is in a desperate state in many ways as we continue to blunder on with our greed and fear, promoted all the time by those that are supposed to be leading us. 

I am inspired by Mahayana Black Hat Buddhism. The central yogic practice of the Karma Kagyu is the doctrine of Mahamudra, also known as the "Great Seal". This doctrine focuses on four principal stages of meditative practice (the Four Yogas of Mahamudra):

- The development of single-pointedness of mind,
- The transcendence of all conceptual elaboration,
- The cultivation of the perspective that all phenomena are of a "single taste", and
- The fruition of the path, which is beyond any contrived acts of meditation.

It is through these four stages of development that the practitioner is said to attain the perfect realization of mahamudra. Mahamudra is practiced both independently and as the completion stage of Vajrayana practice.
