A very natural talent - you seem to care that your tunes make sense. A lot of subtle depth. Most enjoyable. Found the rim-shots a little distracting but I make that complaint to a lot of people - just me!

My Electronic Tracks

So basically I took a nap yesterday that was way too long. We watched a movie, then I was wide awake. I started playing around with some strings, added piano, then went to bed.

After reading for a bit, then tossing and turning, I decided to come down and finish this.

Reminiscence ft. Tina Guo & Jenny Bae (Dallas Buyers Club Trailer Music)

As you can probably tell, I've been listening to the Tron soundtrack a lot. I've been itching to create a track that reminds me of Tron, so here's my attempt. As I learn more about my DAW, I'm discovering cool new ways to make my tracks more interesting.

I could not think of a name of this song. I sat here the longest time.

While looking for pictures, I found this one on Flickr which inspired the name.

The Adaptation

Ever since I discovered the arpeggiator in my DAW, I've been having a blast using it in my songs. This time it's my piano background. The original file name was Strings & Things... Since I couldn't think of a name, I started looking for pictures and found this beautiful one on Flickr called Ballet by Certified su.

Shadow Dance

So I decided to add some pads, drums, bass, and additional strings to my open collab.

I know I could probably play with the drums more, but I've been listening to this on repeat for the past week and wanted to share.

Having grand piano at home is pretty addictive - spending hours and hours playing every day. I would play even more if I had the time :) However, recording improvisations on the grand piano is a tricky and long process. No more fixing wrong notes. Not that I play many of those :) but when a live performance is being recorded in MIDI - it's tempting to fix even a single one. When it's an acoustic recording - alas. Besides, it's not that easy to transcribe acoustic recordings - MIDI is way easier to transcribe. Easier, but not trivial as I don't compose in any notation software but sit in front of an instrument and improvise live, what is sometimes called "an instant composition".  It takes about a week to transcribe a single improvisation into sheet music but it's an absolutely amazing feeling when I get the notes for my own improvisations - they stop being "moments in time that never repeat" and become compositions that can be played over and over again. And not just by myself.

Anyways, here is a new improvisation from me..... based on Arty's motif :) This isn't an acoustic recording but same MIDI recording, produced using one of sampled pianos in Propellerhead Reason - same way as most of my piano pieces... However, now I will make a note sheet for it, so I'll be able to play it again on the acoustic piano.. in the future :)

02 Dirk Maassen - Stars In Dreams

Today I was lazing by Rutland Water (in England) with my fiancée and I had this feeling of complete and utter calm, peacefulness, and contentment. And at the same time I had the inspiration for the sound of this piece - not the melody, rhythm, or chords.... just the sound.

I managed to retain that feeling and somehow combined a couple of effects plugins to recreate that sound... and here it is (together with a melody of course).

All in all the effect took about 20 minutes to get right and then the writing and recording took another 20 minutes... sometimes when the muse gives you an idea she gives it complete!
