I wrote the tune originally to use in "Repton The Lost Realms", but the quantity of graphics I had to produce meant I never got around to putting it into a format Tom Walker could use. So I did an arrangement based on the definitive ITV Schools clock tune "Middle Of The Day".

"I Saw Three Ships" (both tunes) arranged Mike Oldfield style, mixed with "The Hunt Is Up" and some nonsense of my own. I did this to use as a video soundtrack, but I thought perhaps somebody somewhere might like it.

This is my arrangement of T. A. Walker's beautiful Schools Diamond tune "Diamond Cut". Unfortunately I seem to have removed all the charm from Tim's tune - sorry Tim!

This is an arrangement of the tune "My Grandfather's Clock" by Henry C. Work in the style of the BBC Schools dots piece "Ardent Elizabeth".

I made this track to accompany a video I recently uploaded to my YouTube channel.

I had a bad day so I decided to spend the evening overdubbing stuff onto this track - mainly X-Synth (analogue synth) parts but also some extra recorder.

This track ("written", if that's the right word for such a rip-off, when I was around 16) is obviously a tribute to Mike Oldfield and, more specifically, the work he did with Les Penning which had a huge effect on me when I was growing up. It also has some Kevin Ayers in the mix too...

Old Fields (X-Synth Mix)

Sorry to keep banging on with this track but it's of such sentimental value to me I really want to get it sounding as good as I can get it.

I did some further work on the Mellotron 300 strings part on this track to try and get this song a bit more "Woolly" like, particularly on the last two thirds of the track. I also did some work on the bass guitar in the middle of the track to make it a bit more varied and less mechanical. The sound I'm aiming for is 1974's Barclay James Harvest Live LP.

Bit of stupid rubbish. What if Ulster Television's original start-up theme Shamus was rerecorded by Roger Limb in about 1981. Apologies to everyone. For everything.

Open University Tune was based on a piece of music I remember opening BBC TV OU broadcasts in the mornings in the early 80s. I have no idea what the tune is called or who wrote it, so if you know I'd love to hear from you.

This is a new version of this file (August 2015) - I forgot to include all the tune in the previous upload. The tune was created in Rosegarden.

Open University (Baroque - Full)

I tried to cross two Granada start up tunes (Granada March by Tony Lowrie and Drifting by Kevin Peek) and see what happened.

The answer is a mess. Sadly I'm not talented enough to pull this sort of mash-up off, but here it is anyway.


I used Rosegarden on Netrunner GNU/Linux, with the FluidSynth-DSSI plugin and the X-Synth DSSI plug-ins. The soundfonts I used all came from S. Christian Collins' General User GS Soundfont. Use a couple of LADSPA-TAP plugins too; namely the chorus/flanger and reverb.

I'll probably work on it some more when I have time, but here it is for now.

Drifting From Lowrie (full version)

A BBCtv Radiophonic theme from 1983 originally composed and realised by Roger Limb. I thought I'd try my own version of the theme whilst I was waiting for the telephone engineer to come. Sorry Roger.

I did this in Rosegarden using X-Synth DSSI.

Making The Most Of The Micro

I did this music for Big Centre TV in Walsall (in fact I originally did the Birmingham Lads part of it for City 8 TV in Birmingham!) using Rosegarden. It contains two Midlands folk tunes "Birmingham Lads" and "Brave Dudley Boys". In addition, the file features the Mellotron, an instrument invented in Streetly, Birmingham. I chose Mellotron M300 strings as I'm a fan of Woolly Wolstenholme and Barclay James Harvest. The music went down like a cup of cold sick and was dropped after a year. This file cobbles together the ident, the start-up and the closedown.

A bit of a mashup between David Lowe's current BBC News themes and the classic "Newsroom One" used on BBC-1 from 1965 and 1981.

Done in Rosegarden for eventual use in a YouTube video.

Although I did this a few years ago, I'm uploading this piece so I can listen to it at work. This is the Associated-Rediffusion March composed by Stanley Bate in 1957. Originally arranged for an orchestra, I arranged it for two cellos, flute, piccolo, harp and percussion.  What I wanted was trying to do was a "cut price" arrangement that could be used for a schools start-up.
