The Floral Power (DJ Mr Bronson)

I composed this piece in the early spring of 2022, and recorded it in stages during March and April. I expect it will form part of a future album project; however, I am rather fond of this track (if I say so myself!), and wanted it to get a hearing sooner rather than later...

The piece is inspired by my long-standing interest in anime, and specifically by the 2011 series "Gosick". The title refers to the conservatory atop the library tower of St Marguerite Academy, the elite boarding-school where Kazuya Kujo and Victorique de Blois (the two main characters in the series) are both students. It is in this artificial garden that the pair first meet, and where they spend a fair proportion of their time as their friendship grows. I wanted to capture something of the feel of the lush plant-life in the conservatory, and the luminous location in which Kazuya and Victorique come to know each other.

Musically, this piece was partly inspired by the work of Anthony Phillips (especially in the acoustic 12-string guitar parts, and also a certain chord…), but also by the Japanese composer Mitsumune Shinkichi, who is noted for his work on a number of anime series, including another favourite series of mine, "Rozen Maiden".

In terms of instrumentation, I played acoustic 12-string (2004 Seagull S12) and electric (2018 D'Angelico Deluxe Bedford) guitars, as well as guitar-synthesiser (Jamstik+) and hanging-chimes (thanks Paul for the loan of the latter!). The guitar-synth parts come from four software instruments:

- "pad": Cherry Audio Quadra and Cherry Audio Polymode (the latter coming in during the last section);
- "Moog lead": Cherry Audio Surrealistic MG-1 Plus
- "bass": Martinic Kee Bass (with some added "ensemble" modulation)

(As an experiment, this mix has been processed through SoundCloud’s “Dolby mastering” feature (using the “Aurora” configuration). I’d welcome constructive feedback on how listeners feel about the result?)
