EA Review: Cid Poitier N.O.T.E.S Ft. Dubwoofa , JFO & Wends [SUBCLEF005]

Cid Poitier’s “Distraction” - released almost exactly two years ago on Sub:Clef - is unique to begin with, structured around Wends’ lyrics as in typical “band” music. JFO translates her piercing poetry into the DJ format without sacrificing the impact of the vocals. His rendition takes Cid Poitier’s minimal, jazz-flavored production to another level, adding texture and fullness to the poignant track.

Consistent with the pursuit set out within their last four releases, this most recent outing from South London based label Sub:Clef, features four meditative and expansive tracks of UK inspired sound system music. 

This is the first release in the Sub:Clef “N.O.T.E.S” series, which feature two artists, one on each side of the record.

The A-side of 005 sees the return of the mighty Norwegian producer and selector Dubwoofa (his first release in over half a decade, and his Sub:Clef debut) while the flip features two JFO-produced reinterpretations of archive tracks by Sub:Clef curator Cid Poitier.
Cut A ‘Burn’, provided by the former, is a throbbing, half-time sub workout not dissimilar to Dubwoofa’s early work on Dub Police: featuring scattered, reverberating percussion and heavily modified field recordings accompanied by an immersive and cohesive low-end. While similarly reductive and stripped back, AA ‘Hexed’ departs from the stepping intensity of the first track and introduces more irregular and shuddering drum programming: elastic subs and ghostly hymns are matched with a more subtle and complimentary drum rhythm.

Things change slightly on the B-side, as JFO provides a pair of transformative remixes, with both tracks featuring vocalist Wends. Here, the stems have been cleverly altered to provide a respectful and yet highly distinctive interpretation, with ‘Distraction’ modified to feature an almost atonal synth line, interrupted by stabs of resonant pads not dissimilar to James Blake’s cult ‘Harmonimix’ series. Strung alongside reverse snares, soothing pads and a meditative filter bass, the vocals glide along centrally to provide a truly immersive and contemplating take on bass music both original and versatile.

The second remix ‘Circles’, while again featuring Wends, utilises the vocals only sparingly, and instead encourages the listener to focus on a harmonically rich piano line and a thumping multi-timbral snare. Coupled with JFO’s distinct patois watermark and clattering hats, this track is a more transcendent psalm. Haunting and subtle yet highly musical in its essence.

After laying low for a while, regaining its strength and rebuilding its arsenal, Agent 47 a.k.a Hitman has resurfaced as 'The Agency' has need of his talents once more. 
Being contacted by an ellusive organisation of whom only the initials are known - D.B. - and to whom 'The Agency' owes a huge favor, they knew that only the best of the best is up for this task. What that task is you might ask. 

On paper it's pretty simple: infiltrate the headquarters of an underground military base, located somewhere under the frozen surface of the Arctic Ocean, with the only reliable intelligence being that it's a well guarded submarine with the numbers '420' engraved on it. 

Any ordinary mercenary would have had second thoughts, but not him. His main focus being the completion of the mission, driven to the point where he cold-bloodedly sacrifices innocents if he must, is pure obsession. Some might say that he makes a 'Fetish' of his work, and there is no stopping him until either him or his target are out of the picture.

Fast forward into the present, Hitman has already infiltrated the submarine and is searching for his target, unknown to him that this time he will meet his 'Nemesis', who overshadows him in every possible way except intelligence. 

We tried everything to find out all that we can about this unknown danger that Agent 47 will have to face, but all we managed to find out was that he was injected with a yet unknown virus called 's.o.u.l', which contrary to its name erases all trace of humanity from its host. Turning it into the perfect weapon. 

Will Hitman overcome this mission, or will it be the beginning of his downfall?
