Plenty of talk around Rick Wilhite seems to be how under-rated he is compared to his 3 Chairs peers Theo Parrish, Moodymann and Marcellus Pittman and Detroit compatriots. If he was from any other city in the world, the concept of being under-represented would be ludicrous for a producer of such stature and DJ of such capability, so let’s put aside perceptions and salute The Godson for what he is: a premier selector, curator and maker of music.

Theo Parrish grew up on Chicago house parties. He went to art school in Kansas City, and then moved to Detroit. His eclectic DJ sets in Detroit in the late ’90s and early in this millennium are legendary. 

“Love of the music should be the driving force of any producer, performer or DJ. Everything else stems from that core, that love. With that love, sampling can become a tribute; An expansion on ideas long forgotten, reconstruction, collage. Using the same understanding openly and respectfully can turn DJing into a spiritual participation. It can turn a few hours of selection into essential history; Necessary listening through movement.” This personal philosophy gives shape and direction to the distinctive sounds that are created by Theo Parrish. His production output has barely let up since, minting numerous labels and sub labels to release his and other's music, most notably Prescription Records, which helped define the smoky and jazz-indebted sound of deep house in the 1990s.
