For this very special 100th edition of the Crosstown Mix Show, we invited Sir Pete Tong, longstanding friend of the label, to deliver a mix that gives insight into where this all started from. 

Soul, jazz & funk was the sound that planted the seeds of everything we know today about dance music. As one of the early adopters of this jazz funk scene, Pete started his career playing these tunes in small pubs and clubs in the UK in the 80s, signed and promoted this music, and had a helping hand in running the soul music weekenders that would pave the way for festivals as we know them today. 

Hosting the Essential Mix on Radio One since 1993, we pay our respects to Pete by inviting him to mix this brilliant 100th show. We continue.

The Innervisions cofounder reflects on the label's 20-year anniversary, the art of DJing and bringing politics back to the underground.

One of the most popular record labels in the RA ecosystem is Innervisions, and one of its most popular DJs is cofounder Steffen Berkhahn, AKA Dixon. He started the outlet in 2005 with Kristian Rädle and Frank Wiedemann of Âme. Back when RA ran DJ polls, Dixon was #1 several years in a row. We've since retired them, but Dixon's appeal remains as widespread as ever. He made a name for himself in Berlin in the '90s when he was just a teenager, spreading a melodic strain of house and techno that became the Innervisions brand and continues to pull heartstrings around the world.

This year, the label has been celebrating its 20-year anniversary, and Dixon reflects on its astronomical success on the heels of two major anniversary parties at Berghain and fabric. He also discusses how he's kept the label—and his own career—fresh and relevant; his feelings around commercial success; the importance of taking annual breaks from music and production; and his interest in reclaiming underground electronic music as a political space. This year we were at the BPM Festival in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico for the second time and we enjoyed every minute of it. Not only that we got to spend a few days there together, with the sun shining on our bellies and the coconuts by hand. Also because we got to experience such a good night with our showcase, which had us buzzing many days thereafter.

Keinemusik is a network with the label as the pulse pumping centre. Driven particularly by the spirit that moves the collective behind the imprint. The spirit to find your own agenda and let nobody get in the way. The spirit of refining House and Techno off the beaten path. Be it within their own tracks, within productions of other sorts or DJ-sets. The spirit of recall value within record- and flyer-artworks and everything intermediate in word and image surrounding releases and parties. And the spirit of diversification – Rampa’s effect-gadget-venture TEILE being one example. Keinemusik’s own booking department ‘Worldwide Dancing Club’, established in 2018, being another.

Keinemusik has been around since 2009. It has been naming an existing friendship and linked interests of the four members – &ME, Adam Port, Rampa and Reznik. A more or less constant count of five releases per year have been released ever since, solely laid down by members of the crew. And a considerable count of label-parties went down, not only in Berlin, but around all international focal points for electronic music. And surely, there’s plenty more where those came from. So see you soon in a record store or on a dancefloor in your area!
