The familiar and the foreign collide on “Flute Worship,” taken from Akimbo’s Sun Moon & Five Peaks EP on Tonal Unity. The new release is the result of Akimbo, an alumni of the 2011 Academy in Madrid, living for the last couple of years in Korea and exploring the country’s rich heritage of traditional music. An 80 BPM club tune with audible inspiration taken from zouk and jungle, “Flute Worship” also highlights the Piri (피리), letting the unique sound of the double-reed flute take the melodic lead.

Under the Second Story alias, Alex Storey has always been good at joining the dots between vintage electro, Rephlex-style braindance, IDM and modern British bass music. He's at it again on this latest EP for longtime home Houndstooth. So, while "Grand Rapid" rattles along at a ghetto-tech pace, its' sub-bass pulse and intergalactic textures recall Drexciya at their robust best. These electro influences come to the fore on the shimmering, starburst strut of "Bismuth" and deliciously saucer-eyed "Vapor Valve", while "Helicat" packs more Star Wars-inspired funk into its' too-short duration than many would think humanly possible. ‘New Atlantis’, @Efdemin aka Phillip Sollmann's 4th album, oscillates between fast, kaleidoscopic techno, multilayered drones and acoustic instrumentation, fusing for the first time Sollmann’s deep dancefloor productions as Efdemin with his sound art and avant-garde music projects. The latter include 2017’s Harry Partch-inspired ‘Monophonie’ performance and 2018’s ‘Panama / Suez’ EP with Oren Ambarchi and Konrad Sprenger.

Sollmann took inspiration for ‘New Atlantis’ from Francis Bacon’s unfinished 17th century novel of the same name, which describes a fictional island devoted to social progress through the synthesis of art, science, technology and fashion. 

Out now: “New Atlantis”, the epic, psychedelic title track off of Efdemin’s upcoming album out February 15 via Ostgut Ton. Across 15 minutes, Efdemin’s experimental spirit is in full swing, with morphing drones/chords generated by a mix of Efdemin’s hurdy-gurdy and drum machines, Konrad Sprenger’s MIDI-controlled Stratocaster, Joachim Schütz’s electric guitar and Nika Son’s synthesizer – recorded live during the quartet’s Tony Conrad tribute concert in Hamburg.
