Atomnation marks its 100th release with Peter, Barbara, Beth & Friends, the stunning debut album from Blomfelt & Narby. The immersive nine-track record arrives on May 27th and is a widescreen listen that fuses acoustic and electronic sounds with loose field recordings and tightly programmed drums.

Finnish-born Henrik Blomfelt grew up in Gaspar Narby's homeland of Switzerland, but the pair met on the dance floor of a pool club in Peckham while studying in London. Gaspar’s indie pop solo project was rewarded with a broad sweep of tastemaker tips from new music and electronica media alike, while Henrik had co-founded Resolution, an audio-visual collective and event series. The two eventually moved in together, but it's only a couple of years later, when Gaspar visited Henrik’s homeland of Finland, that they began making music together. They wrote half of the tracks that appear on the LP there, using an old piano, a cassette recorder found on location and their laptops. The second half was finished back in London.

The artwork's photos were taken by Henrik's brother Mikael on a trip to Mount Etna, Italy. "The surreal colours and vastness of the otherworldly landscape really resonated with us," they explain. "Our writing is mostly instinctive, but notions of colour, texture and space are definitely our focus. We often wonder whether our music is for the club or for the living room, perhaps Mount Etna is the true answer.[laugh]"

Wherever you listen to this emotive album, it cannot fail to resonate because of the way it draws you in close, yet builds expansive landscapes to surround this intimacy. There are beautiful contrasts throughout, such as the malfunctioning machine sounds and perfectly angelic female vocals on 'Peter Is OK Now,' or the frantic nature of the drums on 'Barbara Just Left' which are at beautiful odds with the soul-soothing chords.

Depending on where and when you listen to the likes of 'Trevor Left A Message' you will either ride the suspensory grooves to a higher state of enlightenment or get lost in the sombreness of the bass. As much as tracks like 'Kevin Has Been Thinking About His Taxes Too Much' carry enough weight and dynamism to power a dance floor, there is also an aching vulnerability to it that lends itself more to isolated listening on headphones. Elsewhere, the lo-fi chords and skeletal garage grooves of 'Tiffany Finds Faith On Fridays' might get your head down in a club, but the organic nature of the keys and warming vocal hums also lift your spirits.

Between the album's more propulsive moments, you are brought back down to earth with ambient tracks like the devastatingly insular 'Beth Is Crying' and hauntingly melancholic 'Jim Lost Control.' It is that duality - those off-set layers, opposing textures and the tension between private inner feelings and extroverted dancefloor joy that make this such a powerful album.

Peter, Barbara, Beth & Friends brings together the real and the abstract, the imagined and the lived, into a compelling record that moves you both physically and emotionally.

Swedish production duo Bambook are hitting a rich vein of creative form with their second release for Culprit: ‘The Storm’.
 
Since their debut for the label last summer - ‘Hearts & Roads’ – Bambook have been on a streak of releases and remixes for notable imprints like Kindisch, Noir, Fayer and Jeudi. Clearly inspired, the duo of Eiad Sayegh and Hannes Netzell has managed to balance the volume of their musical output with tight quality control.

Italian melody makers Modular Project reveal their debut EP, a nature-dubbed and organic five track effort merging tech house and electronica.

The endeavor kicks off with the nostalgy laden yet upbeat “Leaf”, whose steady bassline gives leeway to a dreamy developing, synth lined harmony. Aptly entitled “Into The Woods”, the second track goes into deep territory via distorted synths, a wave-reminiscent element that remains its central focus til the very last sequence. The woodlandish journey fully unfolds at the third track, a contrastingly darker cut, filled with modular piano bits completed by arpeggiated synths. The title track gets a dubby makeover from Permanent Vacation’s Benjamin Fröhlich who plays upon the nostalgic synth line, turning it into a peak time drama by adding squirmish crowd vocals. Konvex and The Shadow take on a less dramatic, but equally serious approach, stripping off some synths but adding oscillating bleeps and lower pitched drums for extra gravitas.

It’s a long time since we last heard from dOP. The boys have been far from quiet, continuing to tour and enchant party people across the world with their infectious fusion of house music and refined songwriting. They’ve equally been no strangers to the studio, with their Les Fils Du Calvaire project releasing the recent Rester Avec Toi collaboration with Miss Kittin in preparation for the debut album of the project later this year. Equally their production talents have been felt in the recent Aquarius Heaven EP Bato Chargé, and vocalist JAW was recently spotted kicking off the Circus Company Limited series with “Traitor Creator”, his collaboration with Piers Faccini. Finally though the time has come for dOP to return to the record in their original form with a new four track EP that perfectly captures where the trio of Damien, Clement and JAW are at right now.

The sound on Email From A Beetle is a full-fat, club ready confection that distills the live energy of dOP into four varied but equally ear-snagging tracks that simply demand your attention. The title track in some ways harks back to the introspection of their earlier material, keeping the rhythmic elements sparse and simmering to lend ample space to JAW’s captivating vocal line, but there’s still plenty of space for Damien’s expressive keys to cut through as the song peaks.

“Melancholia” is, as the name suggests, a more reflective piece with a gentle swing and emotive melodic lines, but there’s plenty more fun times to be had as well as the infectious house bump of “Foreplay” takes hold with a hard-skipping beat and rock solid bass line. If there was any doubt that warm, rounded analogue sounds power dOP these days, “Summer Rain” is on hand with its shocking stabs of dazzling synth capturing a feverish mood that calls out to the impending sunny months of the year.

Always a group committed to moving forward with their sound, this EP serves as an exciting next step for dOP while retaining the compositional flair and addictive energy that has kept them close to our hearts all these years.

dOP - Melancholia

The next release is in the digital house. The responsible party here is a new celestial body, springing from the Polish heavens. Mooryc is the project from Maurycy Zimmerman from Poznań. He has already done his thing on the debut album from Douglass Greed with one of the most snappy songs featuring his voice and crackly refinements.

Different Marks is a collaborative project between Martin Dawson (King Roc, Two Armadillo), Grzegorz Demiañczuk and Voitek Tarañczuk (Catz N' Dogz).

Meeting through their overlapping, close-knit circle of friends, the three connected instantly. From their first studio session it was clear there was a strong working, as well as personal, chemistry; a relationship that was deeply rooted in music.
Drawing upon each members’ idiosyncratic approach to writing, and through their shared work ethic of making the flow of each track paramount, the three worked fluidly together, with no boundaries, and no over-thinking.

On 12th November last year, Martin unexpectedly passed away. The album was completed shortly before his tragic death.
Speaking about the project in his own intimate account, Voitek remembers how, “suddenly, this whole world, an unexplored territory, had opened up to us; one that seemed, on one hand, ultimately familiar, and on the other, totally new...Martin had started to play guitar again, Greg was digging through his old record collection looking for new inspiration, and all those years I spent in choir started to come in very useful. Working on this project became addictive, and for those few months we put everything else on hold (even giving up writing our solo albums and EPs) because being in this small studio, together, meant the world to us.”

The album itself features a sample of some of the most talented singers and songwriters around who manage to perfectly compliment the productions, including Ben Westbeech, Paul Randolph, James Yuill, and Cari Golden amongst others.

Each individual sense, experience, idea and influence has been invested into this project by everyone involved, and each of those elements, in turn, has been fused together by the music, the love and the three of them, together.

Keller is an independent label for electronic music, based in berlin. Breaking down the barriers between melodic techno and deep house, our releases explore the unknown territories of sound.

After one year in clubs, abandoned buildings, dark basements and many joyful open airs, we released our first compilation, containing tracks of the main members of Keller: Beatmoertelz, Agja, Jozak Sander and Cinthie. The first three founded the label in spring 2012, but we operate much longer.

Keller is an underground party community around our hometown berlin, always searching for different and special locations. We have our own headquarter, production studios and club in Berlin-Neukölln.
