CHAPTER 2 - AUTUMN
“Smoke in the Gold” evokes a landscape where beauty and ruin coexist, turning the haze of twilight or harvest into a symbol of memory and endurance. The “hill” and “old names” hint at a place scarred by past conflict or loss, where echoes of those who once walked there still linger. Images of orchards gone to dust, rivers retreating, and crows in the wheat suggest both natural cycles and the slow erosion of human achievements. Yet the “gold” —the light of dusk, the warmth of memory—glows through the “smoke,” holding together past and future in a single breath. The song becomes a meditation on time’s passage: even as seasons shift and history fades, the land carries its stories, and the singer moves within that luminous haze where remembrance and hope mingle.
