Welcome to the WIFLIF...The Whenever I Feel Like It Freek...formerly known as The Once A Week Freek.  It used to be a weekly download service, but I couldn't keep up with the pace.  Quite frankly, I just don't like listening to myself enough to wade through all the material it takes to find something worthy of releasing. I have to much respect for you, the listener, to force releases. And let's face it, nobody's getting rich selling music these days.  

So instead of wilting under the pressure of deadlines, I've decided that I will let releases appear naturally.  Whenever I feel like it.  When something strikes me as being especially good, I'll release it.  If a month goes by and nothing works for me...then no releases.  It's pretty simple really.  The Whenever I Feel Like It Freek.  

How does it work?  That's simple too.  Just scroll through the list of releases including all the original Once A Week Freek tracks, read the backstories and stream the tracks.  If you really like a certain track, you're welcome to purchase it.  

FYI - if you're paying me, you can be certain that I'm also paying the writers and composers of any songs that I cover and release.

“Hello music loving Freeks.   About 10 years ago, I began working on my 7th record, ‘Home’.  It was to be the follow up to my record ‘Laugh’.  Unfortunately, the fine folks at SCI Fidelity records informed me that they weren't even close to finished pushing the ‘Laugh’ record to radio stations, and anything else that I would record would have to wait until the plan for ‘Laugh’ was done.  I was bummed…for at least a day.  

Then I got the crazy idea to do a remix of ‘Laugh’.  The label agreed, and I jumped right into sessions with a mad musical scientist (engineer, producer) named Jeff Covert.   He and I had almost completed ‘Home’ by this time, and watching him work his crazy magic with the computer made me confident that with my ideas and his computer skills, this record could be rad.  

The idea was to extract my favorite samples from the ‘Laugh’ and create new tracks around those samples.  With Dave Watts on drums and Tye North on bass, being the total badasses that they are, it was easy to find samples.  I had more than enough.  The creative process was a blast.  

The end result was a record called ‘Dance’ that I am extremely proud of and even more proud to re-release it as I originally intended for it to be heard.  The entire record as one continuous track!   And to celebrate 10 years of its existence, I am ecstatic to announce that for a very short time, you can have it…for FREE!  After that, the one track download will continue to be an option along side the cd and single track downloads at the discounted price of $6.99.  A HUGE thank you goes to SCI Fidelity Records for allowing this to happen.

I came up with the hook for this song in the car on the way from dropping my kids off at school to the third stream studio in Thornburg, Virginia. As soon as they are out of the car, the music changes quickly. That day, 5/10/11, I went back and forth between backspin and shade 45, 2 awesome hip hop channels on satellite radio, so I had that mentality going when I arrived at the studio. I was planning on doing something completely different that day, but went ahead nd went with my inspiration. I’m glad I did. All I had was a hook and a slight idea of a theme. We found a cool loop to play along to and created the drum track. Toby Fairchild, who played with me in the added bonus, was in the house in full force. I stood in the room with him as he pounded on his drums. To create verse and chorus sections I would signal him to go to and from the high hat and the ride cymbal as well as the stops.It was all an experiment at this point. I think we did one take. Then I grabbed the house bass and spent 15 minuets recording bass ideas. Once that was done, I took to the vocal mic. Again I had nothing. I started riffing, stopping and starting over and over, laughing and carrying on, making things up.It was about 10 in the morning by this point so that was weird in and of itself. Sarah Wolff, a local singer songwriter/performer, was there assisting the engineer, Matt Montoro. I figured she would make a fine addition to the song and I was very happy with her cameo. I actually laugh out loud when I hear her parts. During my vocal improvs, I stumbled upon a line I heard from a live saffire record called "Live and Uppity." The song is called “Bitch With a Bad Attitude” sung by local celebrity and internationally known blues icon, Gaye Adegbalola.When she wasn't touring, she was a teacher at my high school.She was known as miss A. She taught the smart kids photography and maybe journalism. I think she might have done some AP classes as well. Her classes were never an option for me as I was.......not one of the smart kids. I was to busy failing spanish 1 for the second time to be invited to attend her smart kid classes. I remember her classroom being a small closet like room with only a few people there at a time. She was by no means in the closet, but her class room was small. I think they ran the school newspaper and designed the year book there. Saffire would occasionally play the local bars in Fredericksburg. I think my first gig for pay was between 10th and 11th grade, so I tried to go see Saffire any chance I could. I would hit her up for advice from time to time. I remember once between the student and faculty parking lots she told me that playing original music is great, but at the bars, don't be afraid to play songs people know and can sing along to. Her son, Juno, was the drummer of my first band called Down Hill Development featuring Kirk Edwards. Kirk showed me the proper chords to my first songs. He and I switched off and on guitar and bass. We submitted a cassette tape that we recorded with a boom box in Miss A's living room to the talent show committee (Jan White).I figured since Miss A was a respected teacher and local celebrity, and the drummer was her son, we would easily pass the audition and get to play the talent show.We did not. Either we weren't ready, or the tape was crappy, or we sounded completely awful. I’m guessing it was all of the 3. Juno still plays drums in one of Miss A's projects and produces his own music. Miss A continues to be a positive influence on many people, myself included. She's cool. If you are looking for funny, soulful and sometimes dirty acoustic blues, check Saffire, the uppity blues women. My favorite is “Live and Uppity”. If you've seen me in the last five months or so, chances are you've seen the live version of this by way of me holding my mac book and what one journalist says "making ridiculous facial expressions."For one 5 minute segment a show, I've been doing this crazy live remix mash up (as live as a laptop can get), using a whole bunch of samples and the Ableton Live program. This track is the studio version and has me on bass and synthesizer.Warning.... There's a few god damn shits. So........ear muffs for youths. 

This track features samples of fela kuti, trouble funk, katt williams and richard pryor. I played bass and synth and danced naked while I did it.

Felas Funk Trouble

"You Are What You Eat."  It appears on the "Home" record, the "Sight" DVD as well as the "Live" record that I recorded with Moseley, Droll and Sipe.  So why release it again?  Well... this version has an even more interesting super extended loopy dance section than the other 3 versions. The jam is so groovy that it is perfectly OK to fast-forward over the first two minutes or so.  I did.  Even with the fast-forwarding you get 11 minutes of music.    Please enjoy.

This version of Dave Brubeck's "Take Five" was recorded at Mississippi Nights in St. Louis, MO on October 20, 2001.  This run of 11 shows in 12 nights was a co-bill with Charlie Hunter.  What made it unusual was the unknown opener (at the time)....Norah Jones.  She was (and probably still is) cool.
