I felt this song reminded me of rainy scene out of a modern day suspense film, where the protagonist is chillin’ inside a mid century modern house on the top of a forest hill surrounded by trees and glass (windows). But instead of there being a killer there’s just the protagonist. He’s stuck with his thoughts and the rain outside the glass in this beautiful house. And if he’s anything like us, he’s probably got a lot of things to think about.

We’re so excited to release the next chapter of the story! The Day Before Everything is actually a line that Luke’s dad made up while lamenting all the things Luke and I miss happening at home while we’re out on the road. When we came up with the concept of this series, we knew exactly how this song would fit into the overall story. It’s the first tremor, an almost imperceptible sign of things to come. The couple in the story is at a distance and they miss each other and those things at home. They say they want to be together more. And yet, they aren’t. Ironically, after a year at home, we’re hoping to soon feel that conflicted pain of missing the people we love at home because we’re out on the road doing what we love. 💙

The Day Before Everything

I wanted to write a song whose narrative was felt through the background instruments rather than the melody or lyrics. Of course those are a big part of the story as well, but I think what makes this song so captivating is that you experience the story rather than solely hear it. I did this by keeping the melody the same throughout the whole song, and I tried to keep almost the same words. I liked the idea that the structure of an idea can maintain integrity while its meaning changes significantly.

Blue Canopy's 'Sleep While You Can' (out March 5, 2021) is the newest entry from Portland-based multi-instrumentalist, Alex Schiff. Exploring the often unspoken anxiety related to having a child and what that means for losing the past version of one's self, the EP is beautifully introspective at a time where self-reflection is incredibly crucial.

Formerly the keyboardist and co-writer for indie band, Modern Rivals, the EP is a follow up to his 2020 debut, Mild Anxiety, which was produced alongside Patrick J Smith (A Beacon School), a frequent collaborator.
