"Old Graffiti" by Bibio

Stephen Wilkinson has figured out a thing or two about timing and tempo: Ribbons is Wilkinson’s tenth album as Bibio, and although his tenure resulted in a bit of diversion and experimentation, his predominant lane resembles folk music and experimental electronica without breaking a sweat about the comparison. Ribbons sits right in this lane: “Old Graffiti” settles down like a fresh spring rain shower of medium density, pattering against the windowsill, drops randomly striking at different angles and intensities. Wilkinson’s voice apparates from seemingly nowhere, echoing short syllables that he coos and barks through the song.

Bibio has credited phonemes as influences for his uniquely bizarre lyrical phrasing and articulation. Phonemes, per Merriam-Webster, are “[members] of the set of the smallest units of speech” that separate and identify one syllable from another. An example is when two words end in different consonants yet sound phonetically similar, e.g. “tad” and “tab”. The phonemes would be the “d” and “b” sounds, distinguishing the two words but just barely. You feel the tension of the “p” hanging on Wilkinson’s lips as he sings “makeup” and the word echoes rapidly behind; you sense the restraint as he transitions from the hard “e” sounds in “graffiti” into a yodel, howling over the plains of his percussion-driven arrangement.

Speaking of percussion, Bibio says “Old Graffiti” began with it whereas most of his compositions begin on guitar. He was “inspired by listening to old Batucada and Capoeira recordings,” both influenced by African percussion and native to Brazil. This broad-reaching influence lends an exotic air to “Old Graffiti”, a lost gem in a modern world.

The first EP - Chomp! Chomp! presents the debut of Golden Mammals - a collaboration between Eric from America and Chittom. Eric is a multi-instrumentalist and electronic producer with a unique style that pulls from a variety of genres. He is also an active drummer for TV Baby (with members of A.R.E. Weapons), as well as several other bands in New York and past projects in Hawaii.
The EP has three original tracks and a remix. "An Hour a Day with You” blends acid house and techno with an obscure leftfield vocal by Chittom. The remix is a dubby techno slow-burner that will work in a variety of settings. On the other side, with two tracks by Eric from America, "At the Met Gala" & "For the Crowd” are two groovy techno-ish tracks with Eric’s unique touches - both are dancefloor and living room friendly. The EP is mixed by Justin Van Der Volgen and Kenji Shimoda, mastered by Rick Essig of REM Sound. Artwork by Dusty Gibbons.

Mufti is Bernardo Barrera, a multi instrumentalist producer from Guadalajara, Mexico. This project comes after being part of Los Fugazzi, and finds him focus more on rock variants and 80’s music. A mix of electronics with disco, electro, EBM and post punk define the sound. Vongold, meanwhile, is Nora Cam, a DJ and producer also from Guadalajara and influenced by genres such as disco, new wave and various girl bands. Her sounds seek to highlight the female voice, merging it with indie dance for an extra special edge.

The idea behind this EP, which draws on the influence of bands like Depeche Mode, Lebanon Hanover and The Kvb, was to "convey how we are constantly feeling anxious and chased by our failures. And even if we need to scream, the pressure and idealisation of modern life immobilises us and shuts us". ‘Totem’ is an excellent fusion of dark wave styles and crashing hits, it’s a new form of electronic punk that draws you deep into its own unique sound world. Last of all is ‘Moonstruck’, a prowling late night groove filled with tension and menace. This is a fittingly standout 50th EP for a label that has very much carved out its own singular place in the electronic music world.

‘Bufebe' is the name of the newest EP from Mexican producer Bufi and mysterious Lille producer Kubebe, member of the electronic band, Volcan La Peté.
This new work consists of 5 original tracks and was created completely online. During these last months the producers took turns and shared files to work on the tracks projects, which are inspired by birds, bicycles and insects.
The EP is a mix of organic and synthesized percussions, drowsy and mysterious melodies and psychedelic landscapes, creating an amazing jungle of sounds. The cover was made by Parisian artist Anne-Marie Gratton.
