While not pinned to one particular sound, Joe’s inimitable style has taken him to perform in New York, Moscow, Paris, Milan, Ibiza, Geneva, Barcelona, Berlin, Hanoi and all over the UK using his vast experience to expertly craft emotive atmospheres from chill out scenarios to dance-floor energy. 

Crystalizing this ethos into his productions Joe has enjoyed a string of well received releases on a myriad of diverse record labels. It's an intoxicating cocktail that has seen him gig around the world and back again; from smoke filled basements to festival stages and all points between. 

Joe strives to leave no stone unturned in his search for the perfect beat through his Shades Of Sound record label and radio shows.

It is not everyday we are sent a 5 hour mix from someone we have asked to join our Phonica mix series; but when Sheffield & Manchester legend Luke Una sends one… you have to jump straight into it! Having become first recognised in the late 80’s and 90’s as one half of production team “The Unabombers” with Justin Crawford, Luke over the years has shown to be a master in all genres be it Balearic, to Brazilian to E soul, House, Disco and Techno, you name it! With his Worldwide FM show over the years gaining a cult following Luke has gained an even more of a broader crowd from his curation of his E Soul Cultura compilation series via the label Mr.Bongo (Both comps topping our EOY lists in 2022 and 2023). This exact vast taste (that is displayed in these compilations) is very much pummelled into this five hour journey of a mix like a piece of clay and sculpted into a fine piece of art. On the occasion of the launch of his album, "Altars", which kicks off the catalog of his newly founded record label, Black Music, we invited Deon Jamar to take part in our podcast series.

Deon is a Detroit native whose roots stem from the crates of family. Growing up hearing many different styles of music was the initial inspiration.

His career began in 2015 as resident DJ & organizer for the monthly hip-hop showcase Bluecollar Gentleman.
Around the same time, working with Theo Parrish to promote the Music Gallery party series and eventually spending years behind the scenes at Sound Signature. That work would culminate in a co-curation role for the DJ-Kicks compilation, "Detroit Forward", on !K7 Records, where he enlisted artists that represent the progressive sounds of today. His own track, "North End Funk", was selected to join the mix, making his production credit debut.

With over a decade of experience in Detroit's music community, Deon has been seasoned by the many worlds within. Ranging from the city's hip-hop scene to the world of underground dance music, and even serving as resident DJ for De'Sean Jones' Urban Art Orchestra, all of these worlds inform the musical range in his sets.

Inspired by everything from jazz, funk, & soul, to more modern black dance music forms like hip-hop/R&B, house, techno, & broken beat. His sets aim to employ elements from all these forms with culture in mind.

Aside from playing gigs, Deon also enjoys programming events of his own such as the Healin' Session party series and the art exhibit, concert, and party series, Black Music, from which the label.

Black Music was founded by Deon and Brian Oscar (Wrcklés). Inspired by the legacy of those before and the work of peers today, these events were made to honor the lineage while also demonstrating the golden cord that connects all of our music throughout genre and era.

Fusing these worlds together informs the DJ as well as the producer.

A radical objection to industry standards, leaning more into the energy and depth of sound.

Black Music, the label, will carry this same tradition.

I hope you're ready for a slice of sun-drenched, peak-time bliss because this week for the Sunset Lovers, Berlin-based producer, DJ, label manager, and teacher well-known as Noema takes you on a fantastic journey through the untamed wilderness of Balearic Beats, Cosmic Disco, Boogie, and eclectic crate digging.

Looking back at more than two and a half decades of DJing, Noema is a true master at the decks. Constantly refining his craft during a former 10-year residency at the legendary Berlin Club institution Wilde Renate, Noema developed a unique style and nothing short of impressive abilities.
By combining profound selections, fascinating dramaturges, and exceptional mixing skills, his DJ sets take the audience to ecstatic highs beyond their wildest imagination.

Noema's career as a producer and label owner started with a bang when he released his very first record, the African Shakedown EP. His edit of Ata Kak ‘Daa Nyinaa’, a stone-cold fox of an anthem, became a massive hit instantly. The record was considered one of the hottest records of 2013 by FACT Mag and was on heavy rotation with Soul Clap, Axel Boman, TEED, Erol Alkan, and Psychemagik...

In his studio work, he has released six very well-received EPs as well as collaborated with electronic music heavyweights like Dj Dixon, Daniel Wang, Sabo and Grammy winners Basement Jaxx.

In the winter of 2023, Noema released his debut Album, which is part of his comprehensive art piece called ''ONE''. The piece is an ''Interactive Performance Installation'' and gives testimony of Noema's holistic artistic vision and abilities. 

The original album is accompanied by two remix EPs featuring artists like Lauer, Kalabrese, Mehmet Aslan, Shubostar, Panthera Krause, Lovefingers, Kelpe, and Nicola Noir.

It is impossible to categorize Noema's sound in common genre terms. Without borders, he creates his very own and truly unique blueprint of contemporary club music. His eclectic music selection flows freely between all kinds of electronic music. Between Downtempo and House Music, he adds Brazilian tunes, Turkish edits, Disco jams, Balearic rides, Folk-Rock, Pop, Jazz, and everything he finds worth sharing. Noema's aim as a DJ is to find the perfect soundtrack for the moment, may it be a dark Berlin basement in winter or a day party at the beach in Mexico. Mostly psychedelic and always soulful, sensual, surprising, rich in percussion, and ranging from a good old rave to groovy beach vibes, his sets are always unique and tailor-made for the occasion.

Through his strong affinity to slow grooves and contemporary electronic music from South America, he developed the „Cozmico“ concept, which connects the „new“ downbeat scene around artists like Voodoohop, Nicola Cruz, and himself to Cosmic and Afro Style of DJs like Daniele Baldelli and Beppe Loda. 

Furthermore, Noema is the co-founder, artistic director, and A&R of The Magic Movement label, home of artists like Oceanvs Orientalis, Nicola Cruz, Xique-Xique, Crussen, Dreems, Luca Musto, Yor Kultura etc. Founded in 2013, it was one of the first labels that supported the new downbeat scene. The focus of the label lies on all kinds of percussive and psychedelic dance music.

Years ago I visited the cinema. In a small town in East Germany. The movie was about the big wide world. It was "Into the wild". It was about freedom and nature. About happiness and love. At the end, the hero was dead. Not fine, but based on a true story. Eddie Vedder sang along and the song stuck to me. Years later I heard "Society" again and a band of ghosts played Cumbia in my head. It sounded kind of good. I had to try to recreate that. Based on a real dream. Here is the result and I hope you like it.
