The theme for these variations has an ancient origin: it is the oldest complete composition that has survived to our day. This music was etched on an ancient Greek memorial tablet and was meant to be sung. The text goes as follows:

While you live, shine
have no grief at all
life exists only for a short while
and Time demands his due.

These variations try to evoke a snapshot of different parts of life: happy, melancholic, and exuberant.

Winton Yuichiro White (b.1980) is a composer of multiple publications with the versatility of writing for orchestral instruments, vocal ensembles, and film. He wrote the soundtrack for the documentary HAFU, which has aired on PBS, screened theatrically in Japan, and won "Best Documentary" at the 2013 Philadelphia Asian American Film Festival.
 
Artists/Ensembles that performed his works include Afiara String Quartet, Mobius Trio, Singapore Wind Symphony, San Francisco Chamber Orchestra, and San Francisco Choral Artists. He is a graduate of San Francisco Conservatory of Music and Biola University.
 
Formerly active as a performer in the San Francisco Bay Area, Winton is a freelance vocalist now in the Yokohama-Tokyo area.  Winton also enjoys making noise with his voice and gigs as a voice actor.
 
He is also a member of ASCAP and Etude LLP. Collective and is also published under Pavane Publishing and C. Alan Publishing.
