Vietnam is an elongated coastal state in Southeast Asia. It borders China, Laos, Cambodia, the Gulf of Thailand and the South China Sea. The capital of Vietnam is Hanoi, the largest city by population is Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon); other important metropolises in the country are Hải Phòng, Cần Thơ and Đà Nẵng. The majority of the population are Vietnamese.

The first historically documented kingdom in what is now Vietnam emerged in the 1st millennium BC. Afterwards, peaceful coexistence developed between the Yue and the Han during the Triệu dynasty. 111 B.C. The dynasty came under the control of the Han Chinese as a province of the Han dynasty in 200 BC and remained so - interrupted by brief periods of independence - until 939 AD, when it was defeated after the Battle of the Bạch-Đằng River (Autumn 938 AD) gained independence. In the following centuries, Vietnam expanded southward with successive dynasties and a period of Chinese occupation from 1407 to 1428.

In the 19th century, the area gradually came under French colonial rule as part of French Indochina. Japan occupied the region during World War II. From 1946 to 1954, France tried unsuccessfully to restore its colonial rule in the First Indochina War. As a result of the French defeat in 1954, Tonkin and the northern part of Annam became the socialist North Vietnam with the capital Hanoi, and Cochinchina and the southern part of Annam became the Western-supported South Vietnam with the capital Saigon. From 1964 to 1973, the United States failed in the Vietnam War to defeat North Vietnam and its allied National Front for the Liberation of South Vietnam. Instead, the two Vietnamese states were reunited under communist leadership in 1976.

Vietnam remains a one-party dictatorship to this day. The authoritarian government regularly commits serious violations of human rights.

Norway is a country in Northern Europe on the Scandinavia peninsula. In addition to the main country, the Kingdom of Norway includes the Spitsbergen archipelago and the island of Jan Mayen. The capital and most populous city is Oslo. The country is located in the west of the Scandinavian Peninsula and borders Sweden to the east and Finland and Russia to the northeast. Norway is one of the largest countries in Europe in terms of area (8th), but is sparsely populated with only 5,550,203 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2024). The majority of the population lives in the south of the country.

As a result of the agreement between Sweden and Denmark concluded as part of the Peace of Kiel, Norway moved from the Denmark-Norway union to a union with Sweden in 1814. On May 17, 1814, Norway received its own constitution. Norway finally achieved its current independence when the union with Sweden was dissolved in 1905. Norway's form of state and government is a parliamentary monarchy. The kingdom is organized as a decentralized unitary state and the mainland is divided into 15 fylkers. Norway is a member of NATO, the Nordic Council, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) and the United Nations, among others. Norway is not a member of the European Union (EU), but is a member of the European Economic Area (EEA).

The United Nations Human Development Index (HDI) has ranked Norway as the world's most developed country next to Switzerland for many years. In addition, according to the democracy index of the British magazine The Economist, it is the most democratic country in the world. Norway is a very wealthy country; its gross domestic product per capita was the third highest in the world in 2016. The country also has one of the most generous social systems in the world.

Slovakia Slovakia is a landlocked country in Central Europe, bordering Austria, the Czech Republic, Poland, Ukraine, and Hungary. The capital and largest city is Bratislava; other important cities are Košice, Prešov, Žilina, Banská Bystrica, Nitra, and Trenčín.

Two-thirds of the country is mountainous, with a significant portion of the Carpathian Mountains forming part of the country. In the west, it extends to the part of the Vienna Basin north of the Danube, while the south and southeast, up to the Danube and a small part of the Tisza, are characterized by the foothills of the Pannonian Plain. Slovakia lies in the continental temperate climate zone, with differences between the lower-lying south and the mountainous north of the country.

The territory of present-day Slovakia was settled by the Slavs at the turn of the 5th and 6th centuries. Their first political entity was the Kingdom of Samo (7th century); later, Slovakia became one of the centers of the early medieval Moravian Kingdom. In the 11th century, Slovakia was incorporated into the Kingdom of Hungary, which was part of the Habsburg Monarchy from 1526 and part of Austria-Hungary from 1867. After the dissolution of the Dual Monarchy in 1918, Slovakia became part of the newly founded Czechoslovakia. With the dissolution of the latter by the Third Reich, the short-lived Slovak state emerged in 1939. After the end of World War II, the Czechoslovak Republic was restored in 1945. On January 1, 1993, following the peaceful partition of Czechoslovakia, the independent Slovak Republic was established as the nation state of the Slovaks.

Slovakia has been a member of the European Union and NATO since 2004. In 2007, border controls with EU member states were abolished under the Schengen Agreement, and Slovakia joined the Eurozone in 2009. The country is a democratic parliamentary republic. Slovakia forms the Visegrád Group with Poland, the Czech Republic, and Hungary.

The United Nations Development Programme ranks Slovakia among the most prosperous countries.
