Murray was looking for a way to define himself in the family.  The answer came in the form of an ancient olympic sport in which one must throw a heavy ball of iron.

Back in April 2011 I recorded my reading of a story immediately after writing it for Linda Lee’s Writer’s Group in Indianapolis. You can hear their reactions in the background.  The writing prompt for our 20 minute writing assignment was “Sports”.  One of the first things to come to mind was my father’s unlikely role in his family as “the Jewish athlete.”  The dialogue between my father and grandmother Ida is purely fictional.  In my mind they are talking while she makes cabbage and beef soup, a family favorite.  In fact, my father began throwing the shotput when he was around 16 and became the national indoor champion when he attended Roxbury School on a sports scholarship. He continued to win metals in Masters track meets later in life.
