Cursed Objects: The Conjured Chest

239 years ago, on March 11, 1786, the French Diplomat (M.) Otto observed that, “strangers are less impelled thither by need than drawn by the enthusiasm inspired by the prospect of liberty, of abundance, and of happiness” in the soon-to-be state of Kentucky. 

This letter, along with others in the archives of the Kentucky Historical Society, describe the landscape, population, and people. Otto understood the potential chaos of attempting to become a part of the newly formed United States. The Frenchman, who was writing to the Minister of Foreign Affairs back in France, likely saw the parallels in a newly independent United States, and a mounting revolutionary spirit at home, as the French Revolution was on the horizon. He observed that those living in Kentucky, however, were willing to take on the potential conflict for self-representation.
