In 2020, we will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the passing of the 19th amendment. In this episode, we share Kentucky voices commenting on this historic event and explore other items in our collections relevant to women in politics in the early twentieth century.

Episode 1 - Maggie Voted: The 19th amendment and women in politics

In 1996, Sylvia (nee Farber) Green spoke with Arwen Donahue for the Holocaust Survivors in Kentucky Oral History Project, a comprehensive collection supported by the Kentucky Oral History Commission and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.  

In the interview, Green recalls her life during the Holocaust and her post-war life in Kentucky. Much of the interview focuses on Green's experience while sequestered in a Krakow ghetto, and interned at Plaszow, Auschwitz, and Bergen-Belsen concentration camps. 

In this clip, Green discusses the early round up staatenlos or “people without a country,” including her Polish-born father. She describes the events of Kristallnacht, and details how she and her mother were deported to Krakow. 

Sylvia Green was born in 1924 in Karlsruhe, Germany. She and her husband, Jake made their home in Winchester Ky. In 1983, Sylvia became an important figure in Kentucky-resident Holocaust remembrance after being featured in Dr. Otis Singletary’s Holocaust documentary. Sylvia Green died in Chattanooga on Jan. 20, 2017.
