Jeff Steinmetz, better known by his stage name Kepi, is an American DJ, producer and remixer.  The San Francisco Bay Guardian's "Best of the Bay" readers poll voted his "Kepi & Kat" project "Best Electronic Music Act" in 2006 and 2007.

He has remixed for Danny Howells, collaborated with Desert Dwellers and has had the pleasure to perform on the same bill with friends and favorite artists like Hybrid, Grandmaster Flash, The Crystal Method, Steve Porter, Luke Fair, Rob Garza (Thievery Corporation), Dirty Bird, and so many others making great music.

For 10+ years, he continues to be an active NARAS member, and Grammy voter.  While active in NARAS, he collaborated with the SF chapter to help push forward the addition of what is now the "Best Dance/Electronica Album" category for the Grammys.

He's performed at festivals and clubs across the nation and around the world, from B.E.D. in Miami to the dance music capitol of Ibiza, Spain. Perhaps best known for regular performances at high-profile festivals and clubs such as Love Parade (now LoveFest) in San Francisco, Spundae, Release SF, Lightning in a Bottle, What The Festival, Burning Man and Moontribe.

As a trained musician, Kepi studied electronic music and composition in Minneapolis. A rabid fan of early New York breakdance beats; Kepi caught the bug early and began digging up rare tracks in every record store available. His music collection has been described as deep and genre busting. His unique sound fuses house, remixes, progressive, breaks and tech house into one mesmerizing journey. You may have experienced one of his sunrise sets in front of a Turbosound/Funktion One speaker stack at a full moon gathering – you know who you are. Broadcast nationwide 22,223 miles above earth, Kepi provided regular live sets for XM Satellite Radio “Thump Funk”.

In 2005, Kepi and Kat released their debut EP “Limelight” which immediately charted on the Balance Record Pool. The title track was featured during the launch of the Xbox 360 game “Perfect Dark Zero” and went on to appear on the limited-edition DVD and CD-soundtrack for the award-winning game, garnering world wide exposure.

I am specifically interested in situations where composers anticipate and strategize future third-party remixing of their compositions as part of a larger and complex rhetorical strategy that plays out across physical and digital spaces. We find this type of thinking—the asking of “how might the text be rewritten?” and “why, where, and for whom might this text be rewritten?”—an increasingly important set of questions in a digital age characterized, for instance, by swift, easy, and deep web searching and by copying and pasting practices.

The How Weird Street Faire uses electronic music to bring many different kinds of people together and create a common bond. We have found that dancing knows no boundaries or political affiliation, and music, more than any other form of communication, is able to transcend differences between people. It is through music and art that peace is always possible.

The 21st annual How Weird Street Faire will be May 2020 in downtown San Francisco, Earth. The faire will fill the heart of SoMa with tens of thousands of people in colorful costumes dancing in the streets. There will be 10 stages of world-class electronic music, as well as art, performances, peace activities, vendors from around the world with unique goods, food and drinks, live painting, non-profit organizations to educate and inspire, and all the weirdness that San Francisco is famous for. The theme of the 2010 How Weird Street Faire was "Bollyweird: The Cosmic Dance". A special peace remix of the Bollywood song “Jai Ho” was created by local artists who have played at the faire. “Jai Ho” was chosen because it is one of the most popular and recognizable Bollywood songs in the world. The original song has appealed to people from diverse cultures and backgrounds, as well as it’s prominent role at the end of “Slumdog Millionaire.” Bollywood has become the largest film genre in the world, representing the globalization of communication technologies. The JAI HO SHANTI REMIX was played at the conclusion of the 2010 How Weird Street Faire on all ten stages simultaneously. Om shanti om.

In 2003, we released the How Weird Street Faire CD Vol. 1 with songs by artists who had played at the faire. There are ten timeless tracks by very talented musicians. The idea was to showcase songs that inspire peace. The album, like the faire, transcends boundaries by combining different genres. The album features songs from Irina Mikhailova, Adam Ohana & Eve, Shakatura, Quasar, Penta, Ocelot, Biodegradable, Kode IV, Waterjuice, and Bassnectar. Four of the tracks are available here to enjoy.
