Australian jazz funk ensemble Kerbside Collection return with dusty grooves of “Round The Corner”, the second single to be taken from their forthcoming fourth studio album of the same name, following the lush & laidback “‘Glaze”.

Referring to some of the ‘unknowns’ and ‘uncertainties’ around the corner post cv-19, “Round The Corner” is also an uplifting groove affirmation looking forward to the positive things, and seasons to come round these kinds of unknown corners, and the new year ahead.  

In contrast to the cruisy, layered and cinematic first single, ‘Round The Corner’ is a tight, dancy, uptempo, jazz funk burner featuring the group’s core trio raw and upfront. The Rubbery, pulsating electric bass guitar of Lachlan Symons, the silky Fender rhodes (and acoustic piano solo), jazzy guitar licks guitar of Andrew Fincher, and the gritty, razor sharp grooves and percussion of drummer paprika, are all wrapped up into this dancefloor-friendly, contemporary live jazz funk track.

“Round The Corner” embodies some of the current resurgence of live jazz-house crossover sounds coming out of Australia (Horatio Luna, First Beige etc), whilst also reminiscent of Incognito, The Rebirth and Herbie Hancock’s 70’s jazz fusion years. Another sumptuous taste of what to expect on this special new record from ‘down-under’ out on modern funk and soul label Légère Recordings.

Following their brilliant 'Round The Corner' album for Légère Recordings, Brisbane's Kerbside Collection put together a special two-hour mix for us.  

A spectrum selection of dusty jazz funk & gritty rare grooves, joining the dots to shape some of the influences and inspirations behind Kerbside Collection’s 4th album ‘Round The Corner’, an album made during some strange times with a worldwide pandemic that brought things to a stand still, and a planet in flux.

Old, new, rare and not-so-rare grooves blended by the band’s drummer Paprika, featuring tracks from 4hero, Menahan Street Band, Weldon Irvine, Joe Sample, George Benson, Butcher Brown, Monty Alexander, Kamaal Williams, Gene Harris, Lucas de Mulder and many more besides.

90% Australian remixers feature including Horatio Luna (30/70 - Mandarin Dreams), Blunted Stylus, Two Dee, Sam Stosuur, Sabrosa Sound System, alongside internationals Grant Phabao (Paris DJs / France), Chikashi Nishiwaki & Emi (Japan), and Mzuzu (Germany) The package of remixes opens with ‘man-of-the-moment’ Horatio Luna (30/70 Bass player / Mandarin Dreams / Sunnyside Up Brownswood compilation / Melbourne) clearing the air with his galactic space-jazz-beats and bit-crushed rework of "Yellow Fellow". Followed by legendary first generation Australia beats and breaks producer Blunted Stylus (Jigzaw Geoff/ex Resin Dogs) chopping up Traffic into a raw disco, NYC b-boy beats stomper, before Grant Phabao (Paris DJs) takes things to the Caribbean with his ska version of "Cajun Jollof"!

Closing out the release is Astro Travellers/Tiana Khasi/Middle Name Dance Band bass-man Sam Stosuur with his steaming, analogue-afro-house ‘peak-time’ extended work-out of "Afro Struttin’" complete with wobbly synths, galactic sound effects, firey percussion and soaring organ solo reminiscent of some classic S.U.M.O / Detroit techno-jazz / Underground Resistance / Kevin Saunderson sounds. A jungle inspired re-work akin to some classic late 90’s Adam-F, LTJ Bukem, D-Kay, Makoto drum ‘n’ bass, and another funky edit remix from Mzuzu, making for a wide spectrum of remixes from 80% Australian sources.

Newly released Benga-Tropical-Club re-rub for Paprika's dusty, raw jazzfunk ensemble Kerbside Collection. 

Their low slung afro groove given the Sabrosa treatment, turning things into an uptempo tropical club work-out inn-a-contemporary Benga style (African music style originating in Kenya) with added percussion, guitars, syn drum tropical disco drops, sweeps and other sound spices.

Kerbside Collection - are an all instrumental jazz funk and rare groove ensemble from the inner suburbs of Brisbane/QLD/Australia.
The band plays raw jazzfunk and traditional dusty rare groove for listening or dancing.

‘A gritty rhythm section of old school drums and fender or upright bass, alongside funky hammond and rhodes, with some sweet George Benson-ish jazz guitar licks on top.’

The sound harks back to the 60’s and 70’s Californian West Coast jazzfunk music of artists such as Wes Montgomery and George Benson, whilst tipping its hat to some of today’s contemporaries (Soulive, Eddie Roberts & the New Mastersounds, Cookin on 3 Burners, Mattson 2, Frootful etc).
