Kirwani has always been one of my favorite melodies. It is a nighttime raga that is several thousand years old. In 2002 I played a few concerts in Buenos Aires, Argentina with my friend Rasikananda Das accompanying me on tabla. Here is a recording of me playing Kirwani February 28, 2002 at Ariel's. I'm playing my F flute. I play a short alap (no rhythm), and then a composition in jhaptal (10 beats) and teental (16 beats). The scale of Kirwani is a harmonic minor:

This recording was without mics. I recorded it on my minidisc player. These days I use a Zoom H2N for handheld recordings and in a pinch my iPhone has a digital recorder.

Kerry Kriger has been playing the bansuri (bamboo flute) since 1996 and studied the classical music of northern India with the legendary flute master Pandit Vijay Raghav Rao for nearly 10 years. He has performed in the USA, Argentina, Mexico, Ghana, Australia and New Zealand and has recorded several albums. Kerry regularly gives flute lessons, and has created a website devoted to the bansuri (www.indianflutemusic.com). Kerry is also quite adept at the darabuka, a hand drum from the Middle East, and currently studies tabla with Indian drum master Samrat Kakkeri. Kerry also plays guitar, piano, jew’s harp, and ukulele. Kerry holds a Ph.D. in Environmental Sciences and is the Founder & Executive Director of SAVE THE FROGS! (www.savethefrogs.com), a nonprofit organization dedicated to amphibian conservation.
