Fifty Shades of Grey

Kerry Marsh 

An original wordless vocal chart for younger groups, featuring a contemporary 3/4 groove in the rhythm section, written out piano and bass parts, easy voice leading.  The drums on the demo are complex and rather intense, but student drummers should be able to play the chart as well.  The vocals are strong and work well for an exciting concert opener or closer.  Simple but pretty chord changes allow for a soloist to use one scale effectively for the whole solo.

The George Harrison song is arranged with a contemporary approach using reharmonization and multi-meter with varied textures in the vocals and rhythm section throughout.

An a cappella arrangement of the Etta James classic, written for women's choir.  12/8 ballad, like the original recordings, but with a bit of reharmonization for contemporary color.

Blame It On My Youth

This clockwork-style Imogen Heap composition works perfectly in the ensemble vocal jazz world, and features an alto soloist. The vocal parts spent time as both pointillistic and sustained pad accompaniment to the solo, and they also have a few strong moments of ensemble lyrics in the chorus and bridge sections. This classic chart from our catalog has been given a new edition in 2020, with improved notation clarity and newly available SkyTracks Mixer and other tracks.

NEW FOR FALL 2012! - A deep cut from The Police's "Synchronicity," this tune grooves hard in 12/8 and features a tenor or alto who can hang with the Sting thing.  The lyric is a metaphor for political corruption...not actually about killing people directly.  You might want to mention that in your concert. :)

Murder By Numbers

This arrangement of the Jimmy Rushing blues for the Count Basie Band was also inspired by the Mel Torme version, and it was commissioned by Mt. San Antonio College's "Singcopation".  Swinging, with room for improv, and written as both a Level 4 and Level 5 chart...your choice.  The chart package will come with both options and both demos and sets of Part Tracks.

The Katy Perry hit from the Summer of 2012 is set with thick voicings and a driving pop groove, with just a touch of jazz reharmonization to add an element of surprise.

A new 4-part mixed (with three S2 divisi moments) arrangement of "I'm Hip", originally written for SAB Level 2 ensemble.  The extra part probably pushes the difficulty up to Level 2.5, I believe.  

Bob Dorough and Dave Frishberg tune with clever lyrics, swinging rhythms and cool chord changes.

The pop hit from Five For Fighting gets a the vocal jazz treatment here, with varying grooves, reharmonization, and solos for both male and female singers. The arrangement builds energy throughout before making a soft landing in the last few bars.
