Dr. Weber is a Research Scientist in the Traumatic Brain Injury Research Center at Kessler Foundation. She has been PI of a NRSA F31 Fellowship which examined the novel application of an encoding paradigm to improve prospective memory in HIV-infected methamphetamine users, and is presently funded by NIDILRR (Switzer Research Fellowship) to apply these techniques in TBI. Additionally, she is also currently PI of two pilot studies funded by the New Jersey Commission on Brain Injury and Spinal Cord Research, which both seek to improve diagnosis and treatment of cognitive impairment in traumatic injuries of the nervous system. She has published 42 peer-reviewed papers, 6 book chapters, and over 60 conference posters and oral presentations.

Navigating Life After Traumatic Brain Injury

Erica Weber, PhD, is a Research Scientist in the Center for Traumatic Brain Injury Research at Kessler Foundation. Much of her research studies include cognitive deficits, applied neuroimaging to evaluate cognitive rehabilitation and prospective memory, defined as the ability to remember to carry out intended actions in the future. Dr. Weber works with individuals who have sustained spinal cord injury (SCI), traumatic brain injury (TBI) and multiple sclerosis (MS). She has been Primary Investigator (PI) of a Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA)  F31 Fellowship, which examined the novel application of an encoding paradigm to improve prospective memory in HIV-infected methamphetamine users. It was funded by the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR) (Switzer Research Fellowship) to apply these techniques in traumatic brain injury (TBI). Additionally, she is also currently PI of two pilot studies funded by the New Jersey Commissions on Brain Injury and Spinal Cord Research, Research. Both studies seek to improve diagnosis and treatment of cognitive impairment in traumatic injuries of the nervous system. Dr. Weber has published 40 peer-reviewed papers, six book chapters, and more than 60 conference posters and oral presentations.

Welcome to our Kessler Foundation “Fellows on the go” podcast series. I’m Joan Banks-Smith, host, editor, and producer of this podcast. I met with Drs. Silvana Costa, former chief fellow, and our current chief fellow, Erica Weber, and talked about the Foundation’s fellowship program, and what to expect as a research fellow here. 

Kessler Foundation’s fellowship has been around since 1999, and past fellows include Drs.  Abhijit Das, Director of Medical Rehabilitation and Neurorehabilitation at the Institute of Neurosciences in India; Allison Cernich, Director of the National Center for Medical Rehabilitation Research in Bethesda, MD; and our very own Nancy Chiaravalloti, Director of Neuropsychology, Neuroscience, and Traumatic Brain Injury Research here at Kessler Foundation.

A number of our fellows have gone on to research and teaching positions at universities such as Penn State, Columbia University, NYU, Drexel, Montclair State, and many other academic institutions, nationally and internationally.

Social distancing is becoming the new norm in the days of COVID-19. While quarantining is proving to be challenging for many Americans, there may be additional social struggles faced by individuals with multiple sclerosis(MS) and traumatic brain injury (TBI). In this podcast, we discuss with Dr. Genova how problems with social cognition (referring to the brain's ability to interpret and react to interactions with others) may be exacerbated during quarantine, and how to reduce the impact of these difficulties on relationships in the household. Dr. Weber also provides insight into how individuals with MS and TBI may be feeling socially isolated right now, and how to find social outlets and resources to improve mental health in this stressful time.

Many individuals with disabilities (for instance, those recovering from traumatic brain injury) may have increased problems with sleep.
