Description: The title pretty much says it all. I think this was some Logic softsynths and a drum loop, coupled with my Korg Wavestation A/D for the lead sound. This was done way back in 2003. Ten years ago as of this post! Wow. Maybe someday I'll turn it into something more than an idea. I like the melody and beat. The bass seems a bit off, but let's just say it was intentionally syncopated...right!

This track happened sorta organically. I had the guitar idea for the phrase, and we were set up to record with just Mike Stephenson on drums and me on guitar. Jamie McClendon chimed in as we all shared a house together, and this happened.

	It’s been said by sound artists that “one man’s noise is another man’s music.” 'The Roedelius Cells' imagines the possibility that one man’s music might also quite literally become ‘another man’s music.’ 'The Roedelius Cells', in a limited edition of just 500 cd's, documents a unique multichannel-audio installation, composed by Grammy-nominated composer Tim Story and featuring original piano recordings by Hans-Joachim Roedelius.  Intricate, superimposed layers of piano coalesce and recombine into shimmering soundscapes that move from lyrical intimacy to pulsing syncopation.

"During sessions for several collaborations in my studio over the past decade, Hans-Joachim Roedelius and I often ‘left the tape rolling,’ capturing many hours of his intuitive solo piano improvisations.  Rediscovering these informal recordings years later, I began treating them more as ‘found sounds’ than finished compositions. Recombining very small cells of this material into layered, evolving patterns, entirely new forms began to take shape.  Up to eight interlocked layers – often consisting of just a few seconds of repeated sound – create a ‘music made from music’ which bears little resemblance to Joachim’s original piano inventions. But while his performances have been ruthlessly chopped, interrupted and rearranged, the profound lyricism and delicacy of his playing remarkably survive.

The word cells was chosen deliberately:  it alludes both to the audio building blocks at the core of the compositions, and to the word’s more organic implication – the intensely personal expression that seems to flow effortlessly from my friend Joachim’s musical DNA.

Designed as a gallery installation, The Roedelius Cells utilizes a playback system that spreads the individual cell layers discretely amongst eight speakers.  Travelling through the physical space,
one’s interaction with these superimposed cells evolves in unique and unrepeatable ways – in essence extending the act of collaboration and ‘re-composition’ to each listener. This CD attempts to preserve as much as possible of these spatial relationships, albeit within the confines of a stereo environment."   (TS, 2016)
