THE RAVEN
The dark bird caws an aching creak, jarring
high in the branches of my twisted hazel

Light drips thickly - like warm blood or hot metal -
from the anvil angles of its beak, cuts short
breeze, divides still water, and settles
deep in the silence of the little pond beneath

It is not the tawdry light of the mind
where still limbs, still torso, still breath pull close -
become justified - where truth is vulnerable to age

Nor is it the light of secret gardens, of mists
unsettling and godless clarity eclipsing everything

An illusive bat mapping shady new worlds
by shriek and wail.  The old owl's careful murders
These fears swoop in the cool of night

But this raven comes with the light.  Hopping and strutting
Gently tip tap tapping.  Its black glint encumbering
ornamental cherry trees, beach and oaks with ease

And it brings the white-hot light of fear.  The clarity of danger
The fat weight of doubt that lingers near
The crack in peace.  The spark of both death and change

Playing six and twelve string acoustics. Recorded through an AudioBox 22VSL using Presonus Studio One 4. Piano and synths played on and Impact LX49 using Studio One instruments.

Remaster of a track from a few years ago. 
This was really an excuse to play some Hendrix riffs. I tried to fit as many Hendrix musical and lyrical references as I could within the silly story. It probably only makes sense if you are a big fan like me.
 It is also my tribute to an amazing, visionary musician who has remained an influence  all my life.

The Hendrix Switch

Well I was walking through the crowds
With a pint of dark and mild
When a little man came up to me
Said he was a voodoo chile

His skin was green
And his eyes were blue
He said follow me 
I didn’t know what to do

The palms of his hands were hairy
I thought… better be wary

The crowd parted in his path 
As he made his way through the throng 
I followed close behind him, thinking
I bet this looks wrong

Floating just above the ground
He led me to the restroom
I went inside and found him there
Sitting serenely on a mushroom

My God.. the palms of his hands were hairy

He asked me who is the greatest one of all
I said Hendrix the lord and master
He answered with a smile
And passed me the note that led to my disaster


It said, “Hey-ho
Would you like to play like Jimi in a day”
I said hey-ho 
You better believe me right now

In the note was a diagram
Showing, beneath the scratchpate on a strat
Beneath the wires and cables and the pickups and the pots,
A small switch

It said “hey hoe
That’s the Jimi switch right now”
It said “hey hoe
You better take this omen down
Drink it down with your brown “

A purple haze came into my eyes

Well I ran straight home 
And took my strat from the rack
I took off the scratchplate 
And removed the plate from the back

And there before me, with an eery glow,
Was the Hendrix switch.
I thought.. I must have a go….

I didn’t know if  I was dazed or right
It got me blowing
Blowing my nose
Is it tomorrow or are the curtains closed

So a threw the switch in wild delight
My fingers flew like birds in flight
Was I happy
Or in misery
Whatever it was that switch had put a spell on me

So I played for hours
I played all ways
Through long, hot, summer nights,
I dreamed away rainy days

But when I tried to stop 
My hand would not let go
My brain said yes
But my fingers said no

Before I knew it my Strat rose up
And was behind my head in one smooth slinky jump

Get down I asked it, get down I cried
All to no avail as it slipped down my backside

I played with a pick and I played with my teeth
Thank god I was wearing thick clothes with no access beneath

My fingers were bloodied, my shoulders were bruised
My knuckles were red and my fingernails oozed


I needed to stop, I needed to rest
When I noticed the note laying there on a chest

At the foot of the page, in bright purple ink
Was a warning I’d missed in my failiure to think 

“Beware you lazy dumb son of a bitch
 When you once put it on, there is no off switch”

So I’ll play that guitar to the ending of days
When all light and all time and all things fade away

And if you are tempted to take a short cut
All you desperately need is a kick up the butt
