DOOT DOOT

Maximalist house from the sibling duo at the forefront of Berlin's new wave. 

Berlin is built on dance music. But of the many DJs who live, work and play there, few represent the evolution in the city's club culture like Tania and Dominik Humeres-Correa, AKA S-candalo. If the city was once governed by the tyranny of minimal, the post-pandemic era has cemented its reputation as the spot for "more-is-more" club soundtracks. It's still house and techno, but the chords are big, the drums are big and the basslines are even bigger. 

Nowadays, S-candalo are firm favourites at hotspots across the German capital, from Panorama Bar to Multisex and Radiant Love (not forgetting La Noche, their own burgeoning party). The duo find rich inspiration in '90s-era Latin house, a sound that takes New York house and incorporates rolling percussion from Latin genres such as samba, popularised on labels like Cutting Records and Strictly Rhythm (there's not one but two records from the latter in this mix). 

RA.956 fittingly lands at the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month in the US (more on that to come) and it's a resolutely fun affair. The duo's RA Podcast has got drive, sultry vocals and enough bounce to make you want to keep dancing way beyond the 90-minutes, marrying percussion-heavy house and ballroom with trance-inflected Eurodance from the '90s and early 2000s. (Oh, and a Shakira moment.) 

Genres aside, the duo's musical raison d'etre is pleasure. Perhaps the real scandal here is how it took us so long to get them on the series.

performed live at The Cool Room, Chicago

Brian Kelly + DJ LGCC @ A Very Special Evening With Eric, The Cool Room 2024.10.12

This is a mix I made of Peruvian 7" records from the 1970s and 1980s that I felt had some components of psychedelia in their sounds. There is lots of chicha and cumbia as well as garage rock and Beatles-inspired tracks. The scene represented in these tracks represent an undoubtedly special time and place for the development sounds that only get better with time. I will draw particular attention to the opening track, "Apocalipsis" by Los Acuario 5, which is maybe my favorite 7" in my collection and has a fantastic B-side too. Los Acuario 5 play a fuzzed-out and ultra-heavy strand of psychedelic rock that is due for wider appreciation (there is pretty scant information about them on the internet and this is the only record of theirs I can find, but I'd love to know if they put out any other music). Truly though, all of the music in the mix is stellar and deserving of your affection.

Note that these 7"s are all aroudn 40-50 years old, so you can hear the evidence of aging and use overtime in the surface noise of these records

I just returned from a three week stay in Rio De Janeiro. Had an amazing time, hanging with old friends and meeting new people, digging old and new music, visiting countless parties and pre-carnival events. Rio is a music lover´s heaven and I came back to Berlin, inspired. Obviously, it´s Rio´s blossoming funk culture which keeps the city´s music output burning. Now that baile funk has become a global hype it is the cultural pride of the city, mirrored for example in many Afro Blocos dropping a funk tune in their carnival rehearsals. Parallely to its global diffusion, Rio funk is locally morphing into various micro or nano genres. Now that everyone can make music on their celular phone, even the smallest favela has its very own sets of producers and MCs and tracks which feature local or neighbourhood issues. 

Consequently, it feels like every day there´s hundreds new funk tunes popping up on Soundcloud or Youtube, often just getting airplay on one specific baile for a week and then quickly getting discarded. Currently one of the most exciting bailes of the city is the baile in the favela of Santo Amaro which runs every Saturday from midnight to 9am, audible all through the barrios of Lapa and Santa Teresa, dragging huge crowds both from the asfalto and the favela. 

What stunned me the most was the BPM speed with which the funk was booming from the massive sound system of the Santo Amaro baile. From 140 BPM to 160BPM high velocity funk seems to be the sound of the moment, with many tunes surprisingly featuring straight kick drums as a founding rhythm, driving the polyryhtmic batidas and frantic raps on top. Called "Afrofunk" , this current Rio groove sounds like UK funky on Brazilian meth, with some occasional - possibly unconcious - leanings to triplety 3Ball grooves from Monterrey. In short, this sound is hot hot hot, so I´ve quickly put together a 20 min power mix of some of the Santo Amaro tunes I could get hold of. Enjoy!

Baile Funk De Janeiro (2025)

At the break of dawn, January 2017, the sun appeared bringing with it a year of Golden Ravedays.  Every month Superpitcher celebrated the release of each new chapter of his heroic album which comprised 12 albums, a total of 24 tracks and an eternity of listening joy.  These legendary gatherings took place every last Thursday of the month at Smallville Records in Paris where Superpitcher played records, poured natural wine and brought unknown gems from his African, Disco and Reggae music collections to an intimate group of smiling faces.
