Although he was born on the tail end of the ‘90s, DAT KYD’s music is reminiscent of the boom bap era. Born El-Issa Arjami Al-Mahdi in Dallas, Texas, his family later relocated to New Haven, Connecticut. Growing up here, he was influenced by East Coast rappers like Lloyd Banks and Method Man, as well as gaining inspiration to create music from J. Cole. He started rapping in 2017, handling much of his production and engineering on his own. His verses (often recited over gritty, sample-heavy instrumentals) tell stories of his challenging upbringing and his hunger for success. After dropping numerous singles on SoundCloud, he released “Power & Respect.” in 2018. He is the sole founder of Westville Records, an independent label named after the Connecticut neighborhood he grew up in. The label is home to fellow Connecticut artists
