The song tells the story of a girl who feels unmoored by her deteriorating relationship with her boyfriend. Though she feels like everything is out of place between them, she continues to try and work on their relationship, to try and repair the fraying bond between them. However, she can’t shake the feeling like there is something missing within their relationship, some spark of connection that just doesn’t exist between the two of them, which causes her such pain and frustration that she feels as if she may be swallowed whole by it. 
Often while hanging out at school, she catches her boyfriend glaring at her, and eventually the constant tension building up between the two of them breaks out into an argument between them. She tells him that she is the same as she has always been, but he refuses to listen to her and dismisses what she says. In the end, unable to reach through to him, the girl realizes that this relationship and all the pain and frustration it has caused her is not worth holding on to and finally let's go of the broken pieces of their relationship.
