EONS Label welcomes Southern California based IM.NEØ (aka Sugarfree) to the roster with her 2-track Voice of Reason EP. Both tracks elegantly dance the line between darker techno and trance. Voice of Reason pairs hard kicks with a dark and spacey melody, leaning into hypnotic sound design. The Right Thing is the heavier track of the pair-- with harder, schranz-inspired percussion and a delicate melody that provides a beautiful contrasting atmosphere.

The name of the track says it all; I have encountered clinical burnout several times in my life, the first time when I was in classical music, which eventually made me leave the music industry for a few years. Musically, the character of the track is somewhat of a paradox; it appears composed yet chaotic at the same time. The bassline features a 2-step psy gallop, it features the same technique heard in Riot, evoking unresolved tension to fully illustrate the frustration with periods that lead to burnout. The sample in the track is heavily distorted, with the listener only being able to distinguish the words ‘killing you’; it is pitched up and down in various sections, making it impossible to tell if the first part of the phrase is ‘algorithm’ or ‘rhythm’. This plays upon the demands that are put on artists today; make loads of music but also spend all your time on social media. Discussions about beating the algorithm on Instagram are talked about daily by artists, who are expected to be social media superstars as well as producers and DJs. This set of unrealistic expectations on artists is a major reason for burnout, which makes us ask ourselves if it’s the algorithm or the rhythm that is killing us.
