My brother and I visited Klaus Schulze, staying at his home studio in Germany, in the wizard's workshop in the woods in winter. The walls were lined with patch-cabled analog synths. It was kind of magical trying to draw out from him our favorite kinds of Klaus spaces.  

Back in NYC (where we were both living at the time) I wrote the TSB parts over a long spacey track called "Communiqué". I was kind of shocked that it had those parts in it, waiting to be found! Then in a NYC studio Mike and Will Lee locked in the groove, Hiram Bullock added a smooth chord part, and I played all the guitar melodies and overlaid the Wurly piano and some synth counter-melodies.

I'll always remember sitting right next to Will Lee while he laid down that groove with Mike, and the intensity of their concentration. It was deep, like a force field!

A while later, back in San Francisco at Stephen Hill's Hearts of Space studio, we rearranged TSB, cutting up the tape and moving the sections around. (no ProTools then!) Mike recently created this edit.

"The Pool" was a unique entity in the early-to-mid '80s out of Austin, Texas. The synthesizer project by drummer Patrick Keel released two albums and a series of EPs despite the gradual decline of the 'synth-pop' genre. "Jamaica Running" is the B-side to his "Dance It Down" single and the song appears to be a bit of an unusual track for The Pool, more laid back and groove focused than the rest of his work, which is more upbeat and energetic. With our edit we added a bunch of percussion and space echo dubs to give it a more tropical flair for our "Stir It Up" mixtape.

Premiere: Fuga Ronto - Journey Unknown [Phantom Island]

Ilya Santana follows up his 'Running To Your Love' EP with a cosmic eleven track album for Nang titled 'A Western Tale'. With releases on Tirk, Permanent Vacation, Hoog Choons & Gomma plus remixes for the likes of The Human League, Space and Lindstrom under his belt, Santana has garnered a reputation over the last 8 years for quality in the realms of Disco, Funk and House.

'A Western Tale' is a journey into the abstractions between these three styles, doffing caps to Krautrock, the sassy string renditions of 60's swing, post-war era science fiction synth soundtracks and Italian Cosmic Disco. The album kicks off with 'Forget Me Not', a bass-strutting euro-disco record, followed by the rolling synth arpeggios and multitudes of percussive instruments in title track 'A Western Tale'.

Cosmic solstice' is an 8 minute opus of cross-pollinating synth phrases and bouncing bongos. 'Travel Rock' pulls in some chugging guitars to toy with the textures before 'Outland Boogie' takes things a little deeper with pronounced hand claps and contemplative synth runs. Tracks like 'Infinite Conciousness' and 'Running To Your Love' highlight the engrained musicality in Santana's productions, perfect for peak time floors or intimate bars alike.

'Soul Rising' & 'A Love Scene' pull things back a bit, for moodier, spaced-out vibes. 'Feed Me Of Your Love' is a poignant & sharp synth-boogie record. 'Slave Dancer' (digital) only) finishes the album off with hypnotic percussion and soaring space-age motifs. Full artwork by the spanish designer Light Spectrum.
