Widely regarded as one of Swift’s best songs, “All Too Well” sees her picking up shards of memories after a gut-wrenching breakup. She jumps through time to reflect on her best and worst memories with her ex, making the listener feel as though they were there with the couple.

Swift told Pop Dust that she began writing the song in a soundcheck for her 2011 tour in support of Speak Now. Co-writer Liz Rose explained that the song was initially 10-15 minutes long before she helped Swift pare it down, and Swift shared some of the original lyrics in a deluxe edition of her 2019 album, Lover.

Many believe Swift took inspiration from her relationship with actor Jake Gyllenhaal — the secret message “Maple Lattes” is hidden in the song’s liner notes, and the two shared those coffees in November 2010. In a 2015 interview with Howard Stern, Gyllenhaal claimed to not know that Swift wrote a song about him, though she seemingly told Vulture he reached out to her after hearing the album.

“All Too Well” was the fourth song to contribute to Swift’s “Track Five pattern,” a pattern fans have noted where she puts one of the most emotive songs on an album as the fifth track. Previous examples were “Cold As You,” “White Horse,” and “Dear John.”

The metaphors in Verse 2 are reminiscent of folklore/evermore era Taylor, rather than Red era, with comparisons to bolder themes like death and tragedy rather than just the specific memories present in the original.

All Too Well (10 Minute Version) (Originally by Taylor Swift)

Fifteen is a song written about Taylor’s freshman year at Hendersonville High, more specifically about her best friend Abigail, who she met during ninth grade and is still best friends with. Taylor explained to iheartradio on a article that came out on April 9th:

I wrote it about the journey that my best friend, Abigail, who, you know, we’re still tight. We met in freshman year of high school (…). And so I wanted to tell the story of being 15, kind of through the lens of a friendship. And, you see what these two people go through together as friends and on their own. It still gets me, this song, because those were all real insecurities of like walking in your freshman year and thinking like, where am I going to fit in, in this massive ocean of people? Like, where’s my locker? How do I fit in here? You’re like, who am I going to be? That’s a question that we ask ourselves a lot through the course of life, but I think never more than when we’re 15.

In a piece for her old label’s website in 2010, Taylor also reveiled that “Abigail gave everything she had to a boy who changed his mind” was the first line she wrote.

Fifteen (Originally by Taylor Swift)

That's Okay

“drivers license” is the first single and third track on Olivia Rodrigo’s debut album SOUR. It is a possible love ode about Rodrigo moving on from her previous relationship with Joshua Bassett, who is now supposedly dating Sabrina Carpenter, by doing the one last thing that she promised him—getting a driver’s license. The song showcases a brilliant balance of unfiltered outpouring and graceful specificity. Its accompanying music video spins a vivid portrait of Rodrigo as she drives aimlessly, longing for an ex-love.

The song was teased several times before its release in January 2021. On July 23, 2020, Olivia posted a snippet of the song on Instagram with the caption “wrote dis the other day. vv close to my heart. gonna call it drivers license I think lol.” She then posted another two snippets in December 2020, captioning them with “soon” and “sooner.” On January 4, 2021, she announced the song as her debut single.

“Sparks Fly” was written when Taylor was sixteen, after playing with her crush Jake Owen in a bar in Portland, Oregon. Due to the demand from fans after a performance of the song was uploaded to YouTube, Taylor decided to rework it and put it on Speak Now. The hints that the track is about Jake are more noticeable in the original lyrics.

Sparks Fly (Originally by Taylor Swift)

With the song utilizing an inside light pop rhythm with a mix of some synth sounds, “Midnight Rain” finds Taylor singing about ending a relationship to focus on her singing career more. It then ends off, with their relationship being forgotten, as if it never happened.

The song also reflects on a relationship where the two were opposites of each other, in which this case is “Sunshine” and “Midnight rain”. Each wants something different out of the relationship and has different expectations.
