The Sound Of Renaissance #060, Oct '25

Oniris found his calling in the mid-’90s club scene, where house and techno first took hold of him. Years of experimentation and self-taught production across far-flung islands like Mayotte and New Caledonia honed his melodic, emotive sound.

His breakthrough came when Laurent Garnier championed his tracks, propelling Oniris onto the global stage with a debut EP on Bedrock Records that cemented his place as one of France’s most compelling techno exports.

With his All Over Me EP on Balance Music, Oniris proved his knack for sculpting hypnotic, melody-driven house that resonates on both the dance floor and the heart.

On this Balance Selections mix, the veteran French producer threads that same theme through an hour of soothing, afro-prog energy. Featuring tracks from Oxia, Ian O’Donovan, and Beckers & D-Nox, it’s a solid-gold session of deeply affecting house.

In 2006, when the borders of progressive house were starting to blur and music started melting into the digital sphere, Balance 010 arrived with almost monastic ambition. A three-disc journey mixed by Jimmy Van M, the release cut against the pace of its moment: patient, structured, emotionally articulate, and stubbornly uninterested in chasing trends. It didn’t shout for attention. It didn’t try to out-shine the giants of the series. Instead, it built something more durable, a slow-burn statement that critics recognised as one of the era’s most meticulous experiments in long-form storytelling.

Balance 010: Jimmy van M (Disc 1)

In 2006, when the borders of progressive house were starting to blur and music started melting into the digital sphere, Balance 010 arrived with almost monastic ambition.

Disc 2 is the heart of Balance 010, the warm midtempo arc that gives the entire three-disc structure its emotional weight. It rises slowly from ambient drift into soft breakbeats, glides through Cocteau Twins shimmer and Speedy J tension, and lands in that hypnotic space where Boards of Canada, Ellen Allien, Aphex Twin and Underworld all feel like parts of the same world. 

Critics consistently pointed to this disc as the most replayable, the most cinematic, the place where Jimmy’s instinct for mood and narrative became unmistakable. It moves without forcing momentum, deepens without darkening, and closes on a fourteen-minute Underworld remix that turns the whole project into a pilgrimage. 

If Balance 10 has a centre of gravity, Disc 2 is it.

From spinning early breakbeat/rave tracks in Edinburgh’s institute of dance music ‘The Venue’ (RIP) in September of 1990,on to residency’s at Edinburgh's seminal tech trance club night 'Sublime',The Venue,Beatroot@Ego, Pivo Cafe and Low Gravity@The Liquidrooms, Kev's unique fusion of deep & driving tech-styles has led him to become one of the respected figures within the Scottish clubscene. 
Since 1993, his radio shows & guest mixes on Forth 1, Kiss FM, Beat 106,Fresh Air,BBC Radio Scotland, Clyde 1 & Dex FM (Sydney) have given him the opportunity to push his sound to an even wider audience.Having played over 30 guest mixes on East/Central Scotlands premier station Forth 1 between 1993-95,he eventually moved on to present his own Saturday night show on Forth in 2002 and is currently in residence on Beat 106 Scotland.
He has released under his KPAXX guise & Kev Wright since 1999 ,with vinyl releases on Well Wicked, Addictive records & Plastic Fantastic,moving into the digital age & the realms of Beatport with remixes and releases on Plusquam,Black Hole, Avanti, Plastic Music,Adjust Recordings, Audiablo Records,Fixate,Beat Therapy & Quanza from 2007 through to present day.
