Despite claiming to be a 'smile hunter and emotion cultivator', for his latest EP, Slovenian knob-twiddler Alan Roposa (aka Evol Ai) has gone all mean and moody. That's cool - we prefer the darker side of disco. "Dar K Disco" is a sparse jam with punchy snares, a lean electro-funk bass line and a whole host of ethereal vocals. Sleazy McQueen steps in to further the experiment fusing disco and acid (to great results) and Ilya Santana goes straight for the '70s side of town - with whooshes and big strings. Finally "Te Qi" is a quirky little space funk number.

Here we are with another edition of the best damn mix series going on right now! Ok ok, we don’t usually brag about our own projects but we could not be more proud of the Forgotten Tresures series. Not only do we have a killer lineup of artists (Ta-Ku, Zed Bias, Paul Nice, Marc Mac and others) but the concept is wonderful too. We simply ask artists to make a mix based on their influences and roots.

So here is #14 by none other than @dj-vadim who has been making supreme quality music since 1995 mostly on 2 legendary labels; Ninja Tune & BBE.

Vadim was at my place in Montreal for a few days and he was asking for specifics about the theme: influences? weird music? childhood music? can it be dancefloor oriented? does it have to be super mellow? how “old” exactly is a forgotten treasure? After a few minutes of back and forth, he went in the studio and recorded it in one take.

A little over a year go, we got our hands on the mysterious slab of vinyl known as 22a #001 and instantly fell in love with the lo-fi, woozy and organic sounds of London’s 22a Music crew.

Although the members of the 22a collective (Henry Wu, Tenderlonious, Mo Kolours, Al Dobson Jr., Jeen Bassa, Reginald Omas Mammode IV) run some solo projects outside of the label it’s pretty incredible to hear how complementary all of their productions or mixes. Here's a mix I did for Record Breakin' Music (RBM), a Phildelphia-based indie record label. The label's catalogue spans a wide range of new soul music way beyond the limitations of commercial radio. Mainstream urban radio has been successful in crossing over and producing forgettable club hits and over-used formulas. However it has been unsuccessful at producing artists that reflect our lives today and represent the evolution and progression of Soul music. 

This mix showcases why I love and support RBM. I chose 17 songs from their catalog ranging from instrumentals to the soul of singers/songwriters. There is a whole network of artists and labels pushing new soulful music without regard to the current cliches in urban radio. I present to you Record Breakin’ Music.
