After dropping several tracks and performing at select festivals throughout the years, Ólafur Arnalds and Janus Rasmussen dedicated the year 2014 to explore the area in-between Ólafur’s more acoustic, piano-based solo work and Janus’s synth-heavy electro pop, with their collaborative electronic project Kiasmos.

By focusing solely on their self-titled debut album, Ólafur and Janus have been able to combine and further develop their unique sound aesthetics to complete an album driven by their mutual love for electronic music. Made in Ólafur’s newly build studio in Reykjavík, Iceland, a majority of the album was recorded using acoustic instruments next to a variety of synthesisers, drum machines and tape delays. It features a live drummer, string quartet and Ólafur performing on the grand piano, producing an ambient, textured sound, which makes it a perfect home listen and equally danceable record. If you listen closely, you can spot them record the thumb piano, finger snapping and even the sound of the metal grinder of a lighter slowly to replace the usual electronic hi-hat sounds, giving the album a far more intimate and unique atmosphere.

“We decided to start almost completely over with this record, so most of the material is written this year with the idea of making a record that can stand as one piece rather than a collection of songs. I am very excited to get a proper record out exploring a different territory than I am used to. I touch a lot on electronic genres in my own music but never have the opportunity to go full out electronic like we do here.” – Ólafur Arnalds

So when we early this year finally found the time to sit down and make a full length album there was so much we wanted to try out. "Weltschmerz: The kind of feeling experienced by someone who understands that physical reality can never satisfy the demands of the mind."

Lead track ‘Weltschmerz’ sounds like an instant Berghain classic; dark, massive, trippy, and with an emotional character all too rare within the genre. The kicks are banging, the verbed out percussion is fierce, and it all moves around a haunting melodic breakdown that artfully dances on the right side of ‘progressive.’ It’s a killer track that perfectly sets the tone for the whole record.

‘Damage Control’ is a straightforward flex-a-thon, a housier rhythm that struts along confidently. The technical term is ‘floor-filler.’ ‘Lonesome’ brings the emotion back, with it’s super-tense, unresolved melodies, this is perfect for all your mega-club yearning & gurning needs. ‘Relatives of None’ is the nastiest of the bunch, and probably the most at home on Turbo, built around a screechy synth hook. Finally, ’Weltschmerz (Melodic Theme)’ provides an epic ambient outro, crystallizing the emotional tones of the EP and establishing a sense of artistic vision that ascends well beyond the pedestrian.

On already the third outing of The Nursery, Escape To Mars and Saam do exactly what this series is meant for: putting their talent on display and proving to us and you that they’re promising up and comers.

Escape To Mars kicks things of with two solo tracks perfectly suited for the dance floor, the vibe is heavy throughout, though without ever compromising any of the energy. 

The Dutch youngster Saam has the B-side accounted for. Two deep cuts, for which he clearly took to his modular corner of the studio. Loopy throughout both tracks, but energetic still, thanks to close-to-inaudible changes in percussion and synthesis.

London based electronic music label Khemia Records announces its second split release vinyl Ep. 

Aurora on the Lunar side is a new work created for Khemia by venerable Canadian producers Orphx. 

Crepuscular, infrasonic hydro-acoustics submerge padding rhythms, emerging gradually through oscillations and the caustic snarl of static, into a mutant echo chamber of polyrhythmic hypnosis and fractal bleeps to be finally swept away by vast, billowing swathes of spectral harmonics. 

Emboli, on the Solar Side is a new track written specially for Khemia by the enigmatic sound artist Rrose. 

Cascades of iridescent particles coruscate against the shadow of an ominous dirge, crashing into a wall of slurred rhythm that opens into a glacial abyss, punctuated by a fearfully insistent whiplash that finally dissolves into a quantum field of bituminous drones.

After the success of the A Sides Parts 1 to 3 releases it’s with great pleasure that we can now present our next release to you from Wehbba, making his Elevate debut in the form of the excellent ‘The Observer EP’.

This 3 track release from the super talented Brazilian producer who is based in Barcelona follows on from releases on other esteemed labels such as Tronic, Systematic, Bedrock and Transmit records and boy has he given Elevate some absolute corkers here.

The title track of the EP is ‘Observer’ with it’s hypnotic swung moody grooves giving off dark and edgy vibes that builds and builds with an acid tinged stacatto hook throughout that really gives the dancfloor a good workout. Next up is 'Lake Ghost’ which is a much more four to the floor driving percussive track with a melodic arpeggio that just keeps on layering and layering over the track. 'Step Up' does just that with its big room sounds and stomping kick with thumping sub bass stabs, this is a real banger to finish off with.

All in all an EP with something for everyone that just oozes the production talent synonymous with Wehbba. Enjoy

Some words from Valentino Mora
Slow Hyper-controlled Motion is a homage to early New York spiritual house. I have been obsessed with records
from late 80’s / early 90’s that have this vibe of forest, for example Instant House, Jungle Wonz, or Risqué III.
There’s also a strong inspiration from Butoh that runs throughout everything I have done with IDO and with this
record. I get inspired by dancers and certain dance moves, and particularly with Slow Hyper-controlled Motion
I was concerned with this Butoh concept of accepting the fact that you are slow and being able to use the space
within this slow-motion to do a lot. The grooves are all directly inspired by Butoh moves.
In creating this record I took field recordings in the forests in Japan. The concept of Slow Hyper-controlled Motion
was to recreate this 90’s spiritual house vibe but in a more experimental way. At this time they used a lot of
bird samples and more tribal sounding drum machines like 626 and 727. I also included these elements on this
record and also got inspired by the sound of rain, leaves and wind and used these as a constant texture for all
tracks, and to create a lot of wetness using space reverbs or echos and watery sub bass to portray the feeling of
the forest in a less literal way. Also, I tried to go deeper into the concept by going through a spiritual and
meditative process to explore the mysterious aspects of the inspiration.
