Over the course of a decade, Michael Gordon has collaborated with the world-renowned Kronos Quartet on a series of provocative works that have sought to stretch, bend and otherwise reshape the boundaries of modern classical music. Clouded Yellow assembles these works for the first time, perfectly encapsulating the breadth and complexity of this long-standing creative partnership. 

Clouded Yellow features four pieces: the title track (composed in 2010), Exalted (2010), The Sad Park (2006) and Potassium (2000). The title of the first refers to the clouded yellow butterfly, which is known in England for its mass migrations; the word “clouded” is also meant to describe the blurred harmonies and melodies of the piece. 

Potassium is for amplified string quartet and electronics, with a fuzz box used throughout to lend a mysterious distortion to the sound. The Sad Park is accompanied by recordings of children ages 3 to 4 and their responses to the tragic events of 9/11. Exalted, which also features the Young People’s Chorus of New York City conducted by Francisco Núñez, sets the opening of the Jewish Kaddish in Aramaic, connecting the choral voices of mourning to those of the children in The Sad Park.

At the end of 2018, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Gallica (the digital archive of the Bibliothèque nationale de France), Akuphone and Ko Shin Moon were invited to create a piece from the library’s audio archives. After working on it for several weeks, a first version was presented during the anniversary ceremony. The project continued to develop over four months before arriving at a definitive version. 

The scope of the project was limited to audio recordings from the library’s collection that were free of legal restrictions, which meant: only 78 rpm records from the first half of the 20th century. The format is unique, left to specialists and forgotten by listeners and producers. 78 records are almost never used for sampling and it’s this application that makes Ko Shin Moon’s album stand out. Many factors needed to be considered, including white noise, breaths, the harshness of certain frequencies, and the production style from the era of the recordings. 

 Using these precious resources as a creative tool, Ko Shin Moon made substantial rearrangements, but he forced himself to respect the original tuning of the recordings by setting his analog synthesizers and instruments to the same microtonality as the records. 

 Most of the chosen samples were recorded between 1910 and 1940 and came from different parts of the world. These include: North Africa for “Gasba” and “The River,” The Middle East and Central Asia for “Segah,” “Bayati Chiraz,” and “Nava,” India for “Devi Sthothra” and “Narayan,” Mozambique for “I-XIII,” South Asia for “The Offering” and “Sabat Sabing,” Japan for “The Consonants,” and France for “The Offering.” 

 “We’re very thankful to have been able to have our work infused with such cultural heritage,” says Ko Shin Moon. “We thank the Bibliothèque nationale de France for their trust and above all, we want to show our respect to the musicians and singers present on these recordings. We hope to bring their voices to life with our music.”

Obscure formation Les Jaguar’s de Casablanca beat the Shadows with a boss version of the surf classic “Gonzales”. The band consists of a French/Spanish guitar section and a Moroccan rhythm section, featuring the eccentric drummer/percussionist Jauk Armal, the “Okay Temiz from Casablanca”. “Gonzales” is originally recorded in 1962 and released by “La Voix Du Maghreb” in Morocco on an ultra collectible EP, which is now impossible to find.

- This song is the first single of the upcoming album 'Love' . The album started out roughly based on the 12 phases of love thoroughly represented in Arabic literature. During the creation process, it slowly shifted into exploring the complexity of human intimacy and how visceral feelings and vulnerability would sound like if all other senses of expression were lost. at a later, stage most lyrics were based on the writings of Dani Ghassan Arbid. It took form as a necessary expansion on the topic.

Kid Fourteen is the solo moniker of Khodor Ellaik, a Lebanese musician and songwriter currently based in Paris, France. Khodor’s musical journey started in 2010 when he and friends formed the band Beirut Scum Society drawing inspiration from the early punk movement. They went on to release numerous demo tracks and one seven inch split on Tian An Men 89 but disbanded in 2013. After a short stint in New York, Khodor came back to Beirut and formed the No Wave outfit Friendly Faces with 3 other friends, but also shortly disbanded after playing one show only with Dirty Beaches back in 2014. By 2015 Khodor started experimenting with pop sounds, noise, electronic, and post punk to shape his own sound that quickly became Kid Fourteen - Releasing his debut album “Dream Kids Never Sleep” by 2016 with Lebanese label Ruptured. Two years later after touring and inviting Xiu Xiu to play in Beirut, a collaboration with Jamie Stewart directed Khodor to the label Pinyon, where he released his second album “Blood-thick Silence” and single ''Everybody wants a strong man'' in 2018. Khodor toured extensively between 2016 and 2019, and by   2020, He had recorded, arranged, mixed, and mastered his third album “Love" that was released on  his own label Kidsplay. It was re-released on Red Vinyl in 2021. He moved to Paris, France in 2022 where he is expected to release his 4th studio album ''A Brief Emotional Dragon" in spring 2023.
