To celebrate Saint Jean Baptiste Day, which is a big deal in our hometown of Montreal, Turbo took over Piknic Electronik for a major Quebec outdoor party vibefest. It was a blast, another in an endless sequence of amazing hometown shows that always reminds me why I still live in Montreal. Here is my closing 2 hour set in its entirety, starting with Let's Go Dancing and ending with Clouds.... with a whole bunch of good tracks in between. With parents in X-Ray Spex, The Ex and The Raincoats, London’s Trash Kit were always going to be wonderfully badass. The band sees Rachel A, Rachel H and Ros M unite in the creation of primal post-punk, softened with a folky feeling and peppered with snare and sax. Since they released their second album Confidence in December we’ve been hooked. Trusting them with our self-worth, we asked the coolest girls in the city to reassure us that we’re doing okay. Although secretly hoping for a love letter, we were more than happy to receive it in the form of a mix. Tell those January Blues where to stick it – hit play and let your confidence soar.

Trash Kit: Music To... Give You Confidence

Known only by his moniker, 23-year-old Londoner @CatchingFliesMusic caught our attention over a year ago with The Long Journey Home EP. The illusive DJ and producer makes cinematic dreamscapes that sit quite nicely alongside those of 2014 tour buddy Bonobo, and, with a debut album in the works and a third EP about to surface, our appetites have been whet by the sweet nostalgia of Quiet Night. A fan of i-D’s Slumber Session series, Catching Flies has put together one of his own and it’s one of our all-time favourites. “I’ve always been inspired by soundtracks and interested in the impact music has on picture and vice versa, so the idea was to create a soundtrack to the story of someone’s life.” CF explains. “It was nice to completely disregard the dancefloor and make something purely for home listening. The tunes are a mix of new and old and the idea is that you’re taken on a journey.” This slumber session is a soundtrack to the film of your imaginary life. Drift away and live vicariously.

in 1992 i was on impact (or it might have been format by then) with my dj partner Swift - we did every sat and sunday 4 hours both nights, then hung out in the studio in case a cover show came up. i think eager is the word :D

Patrice Bäumel is the globetrotting producer and DJ whose music goes way beyond the dancefloor. The Dresden born ,Amsterdam based House and Techno champion grew up on a concoction of  Jazz, Depeche Mode and country music that (somehow) blossomed into a love of hardcore and gabba. Fast forwasrd a few years to when Hard Wax open a store in Dresden and Bäumel began to find his fingers on the records that would become his bread and butter.

Having been a longstanding resident at the late Trouw nightclub in Amsterdam, Patrice is more than well versed behind the decks and we are so excited to welcome him into the mix for i-D. Ahead of his set at Ibiza’s legendary Space next weekend press play on the deep tech sounds of Patrice Bäumel.

‘The following mix is a brief survey of music that’s inspired me in the last year or so along with a few older favorites in tribute to the Slavic solar deity ‘Svantevit’. In pagan times, this solar deity was associated with war, abundance and fertility. Svantevit was often represented by a figure with a sword in one hand, a drinking horn in another. It is thought that the name of the cathedral ’St. Vitus’ (an inspiration for the new album, ‘Palace Savant’) comes from this god.

It is this combination of levity and darkness, indulgence in substances combined with a warrior (or seeking) spirit that carried throughout the making of the album. Similarly, these tracks all feature some measure of conflict and indulgence with an ultimately transcendent (and light-giving) force at their core. This reference point of a pagan deity embodying both light and darkness sees its parallel here in the modern era as humans and machines become inextricably bound.

The ability to conjure both ecstatic reverie (the drinking horn) and a fierce melancholic storm (the sword) with electronic music machines allows these artists, however fleetingly, to embody the pagan spirit of Svantevit. The figure of the ‘Palace Savant’, guided by Svantevit, lurks as an ever-present accomplice in each of these pieces, guiding the individual performer into something wholly ‘other’.’
