Rising through Edinburgh’s underground to become one of Scotland’s most exciting talents, Kieran Apter’s light is burning bright. Since founding esteemed club night Tweak_ in 2015, where he would warm up for artists like Mano Le Tough, Seth Troxler, Moodymann, San Proper, Fort Romeau and Dorisburg, he has since elevated his profile as both a DJ and producer, releasing on key imprints like Stereo MC’s Connected and Braunbeck’s Sol Eterno while demonstrating an impeccable knowledge of house music with carefully curated DJ sets across landmark European venues such as Wire Club Leeds and Sisyphos Berlin, whilst also holding down a monthly open-to-close residency at Cabaret Voltaire.

Raised in a musical household, with his father playing in various bands, Kieran’s early musical explorations ranged from rock to samba, while developing a love for hip hop in his early teenage years. From a young age, Kieran would make the journey from his rural hometown of West Calder to Edinburgh, indulging himself in all the city had to offer, heading to raves and falling in love with dance music while still in school. Moving to the city when he was 18, he soon became a face on Edinburgh’s underground scene, with his real breakthrough moment coming in the form of his “Sophomore” EP, which was released on Chapter 24 Records in September 2017. The “All I Want” EP featured two original tracks by Kieran, including a collaboration with vocalist Leon Power which was remixed by Innervisions artists Aera and Manuel Tur. These tracks found their way into the sets of Dixon, Rampa, &ME and Andhim and were aired by both Pete Tong and B.Traits on their BBC Radio 1 shows.

With his productions hailed by DJ Mag as “warm, cosmic and deeply emotional,” and Mixmag deeming it “so sweet it’s hard to look beyond it,” Kieran’s ability to seamlessly flit between genres while offering profound and thoughtful components that bring a rawness to each track makes his records as suited to the dance floor as solo listening. Consistently receiving DJ support from the likes of &ME, Theo Kottis and Konstantin Sibbold have meant his records soundtrack dancefloors at clubs like Panorama Bar and DC-10, with a number of tracks in the works for 2022.

With a growing catalogue of enchanting dance floor gems, Kieran’s artistic output continues to grow. With high-profile gigs and an acclaimed Boiler Room for FLY Club at Cabaret Voltaire all under his belt, Kieran has now started an independent record label showcasing his work and the work of various friends and artists who share the same love for quality underground dance music: CB90 Dance Recordings is a passion-driven project, inspired by youth culture and a deep-rooted heritage of dance music in Scotland.

I recently entered the BBC Introducing Radio 1 Dance competition to be in for a shot with a set at the BBC Radio 1 Weekender. In order to win you had to put together a 20-minute mini-mix opening with at least one of your own productions. I decided to use all of my own tracks for the mix, including one unreleased remix. I never won the competition but I've uploaded my mix onto Soundcloud in case you would like to hear it (link in bio)

The CB90 Dance Recordings boss cut his teeth in Edinburgh where he ran the night, Tweak_. Playing alongside the likes of Moodymann, Fort Romeau & Dorisburg. As well producing tracks that can often be heard in some of Europe's best clubs including Panorama Bar, DC10 & Sub Club.

For our first installment of the 'hour with...' series we have asked local hero Kieran Apter to put together a mix for us. 

Kieran has been killing in recently, playing out across the city as well as running the successful monthly club night, Tweak_ at Cabaret Voltaire. To date, the Tweak_ crew have consistently brought some the finest names in house to the capital such as, Martin Buttrich, Cassy, Archie Hamilton, WaFF, Dan Ghenacia and Seth Troxler. Kieran has also informed us that on the 26th of March they have teamed up with Aberdeen’s Minival to showcase Mano Le Tough’s Maeve Label at Cabaret Voltaire (Edinburgh) with sets from Baikal, The Drifter and Le Tough himself. Additionally, they have invited Burning Man regular Lee Burridge to play this Saturday (Feb 27th) at their monthly residency. 

The mix features a number of tracks out on Optimo Music, Hivern Discs, Kompakt, Permanent Vacation and Jamie XX's Young Turk's records.

Volume VII brought to you by Edinburgh based Kieran Apter (@kieran-apter). Co-founder of Edinburgh’s Tweak_ party series and with three EPs to his name to date, Apter is a relative newcomer to the production circuit with a promising year ahead.  Since his debut release on Anima Somnis this August, Apter secured releases with Chapter 24 Records and Anjunadeep before 2017’s close.  With vocals from Leon Power, his Chapter 24 Records EP saw distinctive remixes from Aera and Manuel Tur and was supported on dancefloors by Keinemusik and Dixon to name but a few – no short order for a rookie producer on his sophomore release. 

Simply put, his productions are spellbinding. Employing drama in his arrangements, Apter’s growing catalog is riddled with a sense of restlessness, a soul-searching melancholia and a willful power to rectify this incongruence - a sensation we expect reminiscent to gazing across the Scottish Highlands on low winter’s light. 

As a DJ, he weaves a similar story, binding hands up highs with inward looking reposes. This mix closes the year for both us and he, and with a handful of exclusives he weaves a turbulence of emotions resemblant of 2017, ending on a positive note Apter offers a good omen for the year ahead.  We certainly hope it to be so and expect no less for Apter, for him the only way is up.

Live from the Chapter 24 Records takeover at Sisyphos Strand (Beach) Stage.

Closing the beach stage at Sisyphos back in August was possibly my favourite gig to date! I was a little nervous before going on as Katrinka had the crowd eating out of the palm of her hand before I started, but after a couple of tracks (and a couple of beers 😉) I relaxed into it, and it always helps having friends come along for a dance with you!

The place was packed by the time I got there and the sun came down as I played, you may be able to tell at which point by the track selection! Enjoy..

Consistently receiving DJ support from artists such as &ME, Butch, Theo Kottis, Konstantin Sibbold, Jennifer Cardini and Sean Johnston have meant his records soundtrack dancefloors at clubs like Panorama Bar, DC-10, and Subclub. 

In the last 18 months, Kieran’s music has gone on to receive multiple plays on BBC Radio 1 and BBC Scotland, becoming a regular feature and gaining support from the BBC Introducing programme. He holds residencies at both Crèche in London, run by Alexis Raphael, and Pleasure at Cabaret Voltaire alongside Theo Kottis, Alien Communications, IDA and more. He also opened the Boiler Room Stage at last year’s FLY OPEN AIR festival. 

With a busy release schedule taking us up to 2024, Kieran has set himself up well for an exciting future.
