Time is a funny thing; when you are working, time off is what you crave; it represents freedom, possibility; it is a reward for the work you have done, a rest from labour. When you are not working, or in and out of work, time only represents anxiety and pressure. Months go grinding by, rent is due again and again, and the future gapes ahead before you with the promise of nothing but more of the same. When you are under-employed, any free time you do have is spent chasing work, making phone calls, sending emails, and putting your CV on various websites. Time is precious and valuable to busy people; when you are not busy, that time is a burden, because it is time you can’t afford.

Doubts turn inwards, and the shame and blame of unemployment makes you wonder what is wrong with you. You can’t drink at the new pubs that have opened up in your area, with craft beers and £12 burgers; the flats that are being built on the brownfield site down the road are so unbelievably expensive that they might as well be on the moon. But yet, there are people who will buy them, there are people in the pubs, in the restaurants, so what is wrong with you? Isn’t this your home too? Aren’t you trying?

There Was a Person:

There was a person under the train,
Walked out of the station to wait in the rain,
The buses were crowded, though I knew a face,
Out the corner of my eye.

A baby was crying itself to life,
Italians talked on the seats behind,
Got off at St. Pauls, and looked up, and sighed
At the colour of the sky

Been keeping my notes in an empty can,
I scrape up the rent working cash in hand,
Still can’t save the money I owe the bank,
No matter what I try

And there was a person under the train,
In hours his name washed away in the rain,
Recover the hour, wipe the stain,
From the corner of your eye

Born with wings, never learned to fly,
We look up at life.
Train’s late, I don’t mind,
They’ve got no jobs, no, all I’ve got it time.

And there was a person…

A couple days work loading Luton vans,
I spoke to the foreman, it’s out of his hands,
Still can’t save the money I owe the bank,
No matter what I try

But I keep on trying, seizing the day,
I know all the right things, say them the wrong way,
I wait for tomorrow, see what it brings,
I know why the caged bird sings

But I just can’t find a place to begin,
I called up some people, they all said the same thing,
I wait for tomorrow, to see what it brings,
I know why the caged bird sings
